Ruby Modine, Star of ‘Satanic Panic’ And ‘Happy Death Day,’ Chats With PopHorror!

Through PopHorror, I have been very fortunate to interview many of the people that I love watching on film and television shows. I am appreciative of all of them! However, I must confess, getting the chance to chat with Ruby Modine is a highlight of my journalism career. She exudes so much positive energy! I just loved her! Check out our interview here and you can see why.

PopHorror: Hi Ruby! How are you?

Ruby Modine: Hi Lacy! I’m good, how are you?

PopHorror: I’m great! I’m really excited to talk to you! I just watched Satanic Panic last night, and I absolutely loved it!

Ruby Modine: Yes! That’s awesome!

PopHorror: You are so versatile with your band, television, and now film careers. How did you get your start in the entertainment industry?

Ruby Modine: My father is an actor, and he let me go to set with him all the time when I was younger. Whenever I was on set, it felt like that was that’s where I was meant to be. I loved watching everyone jump in and out of the costumes and become these characters. Because I got to spend so much time on set, I was like, “This is what I have to do.” I also sang, and you add in dreams of becoming a chef, and you just kind of see what sticks! (laughs)

Ruby and her dad, Matthew Modine

PopHorror: Since you mentioned your dad, Matthew Modine, I just want to say my favorite movie of your dad’s is Fluke.

Ruby Modine: OH MY GOD! Yes! When I was a kid, I asked him, “How did you get inside that dog? How did your voice get inside that dog, papa?!”

PopHorror: I can’t watch that movie to this day without crying. It gets me every time.

Ruby Modine: Aw, that is awesome. I love it, too! I will make sure that I tell him you said that!

PopHorror: Thank you! I’ve got to say that we are glad the acting career stuck. What was it like to be the killer in the biggest slasher whodunit of the decade, Happy Death Day? [2017 – read the PopHorror review here]

Ruby Modine: It was so awesome! And it was so cool to be able to go from that very positive character, and then suddenly, completely switch it up and show a different side with Lori Spengler. And then, in the second one [Happy Death Day 2 U 2019], even more so.

PopHorror: I love them both, and yes, they are very different. You’ve done a few horror comedies now. Is there something that draws you to the genre?

Ruby Modine: It’s just kind of what the universe is throwing at me right now. I’m very happy about it, because I always loved horror. I will continue to work in horror as long as I can! There’s nothing better than jumping in the dark when you go to see a horror movie. And then being able to laugh and release the tension in your chest… I just love it!

PopHorror: Also, I have to say that I love Shameless. Lip and Sierra are one of my ALL time favorite couples. I am rooting for them. I was sad when your character left! I hope Sierra comes back.

Ruby Modine: Oh, thank you! I am so appreciative! Who knows, maybe they will bring Sierra back! I love playing her so much, and everyone on that cast crew feels like family. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I am truly grateful. So, fingers crossed I get to make my return!

PopHorror: Your character, Judy, in Satanic Panic is definitely my favorite. I think “Strictly dickly” is going to be a common phrase in my household from now on.

(Ruby laughs)

PopHorror: What was it like to play such an over exaggerated character?

Ruby Modine: It was incredible. I received the script and was like, “Oh…crap. Oh, my gosh! I have to audition for this!” I had an opportunity to get in the room, and I played around with it. The first thing Chelsea Stardust said was, “Judy goes through one hell of a ride. It’s going to be intense. Are you ready for it?” And I was like, “I am SO ready!” So, along with getting really excited about all these practical effects – pulling the hair out of my mouth, my eyes bleeding, and throwing up worms – and then to add this really awesome banter, I was just so excited. I was constantly running lines with Hayley in her hotel room. It was just such a blast! I really loved it.

PopHorror: Well, you absolutely nailed it!

Ruby Modine: Aw, thank you!

PopHorror: What was the most challenging thing about playing Judy?

Ruby Modine and Hayley Griffith in Satanic Panic

Ruby Modine: Well, the physicality was a little intense. The real difficulty was that I just wanted to have an understanding of her. I wanted to know the house she grew up in. Rebecca and Jerry played my parents, who are both so incredible. So I also just got a sense for them as well. I talked to Hayley and got an idea of what she thought our friendship became. When I first read the part I thought, “Okay, I’m a bad guy. All the way to the end.” And then, as Chelsea, Hayley and I continued to spend time together and really became friends, we all agreed that no, this is what the character is going to be.

PopHorror: There are so many fun scenes in this film. Do you have any behind the scenes stories you can share?

Ruby Modine: Oh, lord. So many! (laughs) The skin writing scene was obviously the most hectic day on set by far. We had to constantly write on my body, erase, write on my body, erase. And then, we had to put the worms in my mouth to throw up, and Hayley, in real life, ran to the sink, gripped it and just started screaming her head off. Then she had to pull hair out of my mouth, and I actually almost really threw up. It was just thing after thing after thing. And the best part about it is that the friendship that was portrayed on screen actually did take off in real life, with Hayley and I. We would just keep bursting out laughing in between takes and hugging each other saying, “We are going to get through this!” But I have quite a few behind the scenes videos that I’ll be showing as soon as the release date happens!

Hayley Griffith and Ruby Modine

PopHorror: Right on! I can’t wait to see them! What would you like the audience to take away from this film?

Ruby Modine: I would hope that audiences take away that friendship can mend all wounds. That with good people by you, you can get through it all.

PopHorror: Even witchery. (laughs)

Ruby Modine: YES! (laughs) And the blood, sweat and tears that go into work really can be worth it, because there was so much that went on during this film. We were all so smiley and happy when we saw the finished product.

PopHorror: I absolutely loved it. It’s definitely my favorite indie horror movie of the year!

Ruby Modine: Oh, wow! That’s awesome! Thank you!

PopHorror: What is your favorite horror movie?

Ruby Modine: Like REAL horror or horror comedy? Because I love Evil Dead 2, but I’m not sure that falls into the horror comedy genre.

PopHorror: It does! Horror comedy for sure! Was there one that scared you as a kid?

Ruby Modine: Okay… you know what I saw just before Satanic Panic? Hereditary… [2018 – read the PopHorror review here] That is now the scariest movie that’s ever existed on our planet. So I’m going to go with Hereditary. (laughs) I’m not kidding… I didn’t sleep for three days.

PopHorror: Have you seen his follow up, Midsommar? [2019 – read the PopHorror review here]

Ruby Modine: No, I haven’t yet!

PopHorror: It’s amazing! I actually liked it more than Hereditary.

Ruby Modine: I will take your word for it, and I’m going to watch it tonight!

PopHorror: Do you have any upcoming films or projects you want to tell your fans about?

Ruby Modine: I do have an upcoming film that I’m not allowed to discuss. The only thing I am allowed to say is I am currently learning a Swedish rock song on acoustic guitar.

PopHorror: That is amazing! We will definitely be on the lookout for that! Do you have any advice to young actors wanting to get into the business?

Ruby Modine: Every no is a step closer to a yes!

Thank you so much to Ruby Modine! We loved Satanic Panic! You can check it out on VOD now!
