PopHorror Let's Get Scared
From JJ Villard, creator of JJ Villard’s Fairy Tales (read our interview with him here), comes a new Cartoon Cartoon short made for Warner Bros TV.
Synopsis:
Running seven minutes, Scaredy Cat is a spooky comedy for kids about a timid half-cat, half Vietnamese boy who is afraid of everything and his fearless best friend, Ghost Girl, who helps him face his fears. Together they explore monsters, mysteries, and magical secrets hidden beneath their hometown of Santa Barbara.
As someone who grew up watching cartoons in the 90s and early 2000s, Villard’s short was honestly delightful. It provided just the right amount of creepy creatures and Halloween magic without toeing out of a family friendly comfort zone. The character and creature designs show a lot of inspiration from Madballs, Goosebumps, and the short even utilizes the classic Gross Up Close Up gag many associate with classics like Spongebob and Misadventures of Flapjack.
Ghost Girl is heavily inspired by Beetlejuice in character and design, and is a great counter to Scaredy Cat himself. You can tell in (hopefully!) future adventures, she’d be equal parts helping Scaredy Cat come out of his shell… and causing mischief for him.
If you’re looking for some family friendly fun that is spooky without being “too much”, I would highly encourage checking out Villard’s short, which is available below and on Youtube! No blood, guts, or swears! Definitely recommend for fans and families who enjoyed Gravity Falls, Goosebumps, or Hilda.
