3. Bonfires – The Wicker Man (1973)
How do I sum up The Wicker Man? It’s not an easy task. Long story short, the movie is about the clashing of conservative, puritanical Christian values with an exotic version of Celtic paganism that celebrates pleasures of the flesh and rejuvenation. Originating as a Police Sergeant’s quest to find a missing girl on the island of Summerisle, the story takes us on a different kind of journey. Like most great horror movies, The Wicker Man actually addresses some issues and is not simply about a body count or some hulking villain stalking around. Instead, we have a film culminating in a sacrificial bonfire which the people of Summerisle believe is essential for the next year’s crop harvest. And, as the island’s residents look on happily at their sacrifice, one may question the nature of tradition.
