Panic Fest 2020 Review – ‘Allergic Overreaction’ Is A Genius Black Comedy

Every once in awhile, a movie comes along that completely changes the way you look at something. It makes you think, “Damn it, why the hell didn’t I think of that?” Allergic Overreation is that movie. Directed by Zachary Eglinton (The Poisoning 2013), the 14 minute film stars Ace Marrero (Ride Along 2 2016), Matt Mercer (All The Creatures Were Stirring 2018 – read our review here), Andrew Nathaniel Morris (Spooky Snacks 2015), and C.B. Mullen (Furocious 2017).

Synopsis:

Our friends gather for a weekend long mother of all marathons, a Freddy Vs Jason Fest. Scott brings a plate of COOKIES to share with his friends. They’re jam packed with all kinds of stuff including chocolate, caramel and peanuts! Unbeknownst to Scott, one of his friend’s has a SEVERE nut allergy. And after that friend eats MANY cookies, the rest of the group has a serious problem on their hands.

The first few minutes of Allergic Overreaction did lull me into thinking that I was going to have to sit through a torturous frat type of film complete with obnoxious characters you just wish would end up in the movie Hostel (2005). But suddenly, the movie took a hard left and completely blew my mind. Once the allergic reaction kicks in, the fun begins. I really can’t give to much more away, but I will say that the filmmaker’s spin on anaphylactic shock is genius. The actors are are fantastic, too, giving their characters just the right amount of terror, desperation, and comedic flair.

Allergic Overreaction is black comedy at its finest, and the practical effects – whether it’s the swollen face of an allergic reaction or a bunch of blood and guts – are outstanding. This is, without a doubt, one of the most hysterical short films I have ever seen.

Do I need to say more? You must watch this film!
