It’s now July, horror fans! That means it’s time for fishing, making S’Mores, and sitting around the campfire, and telling scary stories. But for a young couple who stumbles across a horrific crime scene, their camping trip soon turns into a fight for survival in the upcoming thriller, Killing Ground, which is being released in theaters and on VOD Friday, July 21st. As we eagerly await the release of Killing Ground, PopHorror looks back on the best horror films that fans need to watch before their own camping trips.
Now, for those who aren’t horror fans, this would be a list of horror films to AVOID before camping. But, the horror community is a group that actually loves getting spooked. So, here are our choices for the best horror films to watch before you go camping! (By the way, cabin in the woods films will not be included on this particular list).
Friday The 13th (1980)/ Friday The 13th (2009) – Double Feature
The original Friday The 13th is one of the most well-known camp horror stories. This film has some of the best horror movie kills, and before Jason reigned supreme in the franchise, his mother was doing all the dirty work.
I know what you’re thinking. Why did I put the remake on this list instead of any of the Friday the 13th sequels? Quite simply, it’s all because of that first scene. When five friends go on a camping trip, they set up a little to close to Jason’s territory. The scene brought a perfectly dark atmosphere and some of my favorite Jason kills. It was a solid continuation of the franchise and the darker tone will definitely set the mood for your trip!
