Eliza Hooper’s ‘WELLWOOD’ (2025) – Review

If National Lampoon’s Alien Vacation was a movie, it might go something like this, but maybe with a lot more of Chevy Chase’s crazed antics. However, this movie goes darker than expected with some twists and turns and it looks remarkable, but sadly Wellwood doesn’t cover any new ground.

The story follows newly-married couple Nick and Laura Harper as they honeymoon in a remote location that gives the vibe of The Cabin in the Woods. The couple, or in this case Nick, come across a blue alien with some strange powers to heal. Afterwards, all hell breaks loose.

The film has so much potential but apparently it squanders all of that for cheap thrills. I’m not gonna lie. The practical effects are absolutely astounding. It’s obvious that the practical effects department spent most of the money on all of that. However the film seems more like a retread into other bigger, better horror movies that featured aliens from an outer space world.

That isn’t to say that the movie is so egregious and terrible like Tommy Wiseau’s The Room. The problem with the movie is that it’s already been told and done so many times before. We all remember ET: The Extraterrestrial. That’s what started this space craze in movies.

Overall Wellwood has its moments but it doesn’t seem to be revolutionary enough to be called something great.
