Time of Death took me by surprise and not necessarily in a good way. In fact, I think I remain neutral here: not the best film I have ever seen, but also not the worst. I have seen a lot of movies that I just fall asleep trying to watch. Time of Death left me confused and irritated, waiting for a little bit of clarity. I have a few reasons this film was not for me.
Let’s get into this review and break it down.
Synopsis
When a prisoner vanishes without a trace, Detective Frank Morley is sent to a decaying prison on the verge of shutdown. What begins as a routine investigation quickly spirals into a dangerous search for answers.
What Did I Get Myself Into?
The preview didn’t leave much to the imagination; it was almost as if I should have seen the warning signs. It looked like a very interesting film, then it flopped. I don’t know what it was, maybe the most dialogue I have ever sat through. I know it’s supposed to be a think piece, but to be honest. There a didn’t feel as if it was even close to being a thriller either. I don’t mean to be completely negative, but sometimes this stuff happens. I am not afraid to lie.
What turned me off the most was the premise. Although there are a million “whodunnit” films, I didn’t even think it was worth that title either. What the movie lacks in interest, it makes up for with a somewhat original idea; however, it was the same old dirty and dingy jail with rows of inmates. It gives me anxiety, and I have never even witnessed this type of place. However, it did do justice to the creepy factor.

The dark and dingy hallways raised my ire, like looking back into tike. That is the most tragic part; this film seemed so promising. I happen to feel like I was duped into this film. Although it has its moments of total gloom, like all those old detective movies where it is constantly raining and it’s the same old, same old.
The story had so many holes that were left untouched. I will give credit where credit is due, and I happen to think the movie was a bit brutal for several scenes, but then it goes right back to being dialogue-driven. I wish I had better words, but nothing about Time of Death held me, even the predictable ending. Basically, Time of Death falls into the ranks of “love or hate” responses. I am still in the middle, swaying to the left. With that being said, it is worth a one-watch style; you may love it. I am pretty picky, and I think that’s why I wasn’t too interested.
In The End
In the end, I cut my losses and watched the film, and I do have to say that under a second watch, the interest still didn’t perk me up. I feel like Time of Death leaves us needing more. We ned more structure without taking the idea too seriously. I compare the movie to the game Heavy Rain. There is too much thought involved, not to sound like a Negative Nancy, so I will leave with the positives, and I stand behind the idea of giving the film at least once to form your own opinion. I am just spoiled and picky; I knew my subgenre love when I was just a little kid, and films like Time of Death remind me of the idea that I love leaving reality for a while, and Time of Death just didn’t cut it for my imagination.
