7. The unnamed twins from The Notebook (2013)
No, not that Notebook. This one is a Hungarian WWII drama, directed by Janos Szasz, about two pampered 13-year-old twin boys who are dropped off at their grandmother’s rural Hungarian farm during the war to keep them safe. Just before they leave, they’re told by their loving parents to keep write everything they experience in a notebook. Their grandmother (Piroska Molnar) immediately starves and dehumanizes them, calling them bastards or One and Other. Between this and the Nazi camp that settles nearby, the boys get harsh, cruel lessons on survival and become cold and detached from the evil surrounding them. They decide that, in order to save themselves from the pain of hunger and emotion, they must train themselves to feel nothing, even going so far as to beat each other up to make their bodies tougher. They’re eventually able to murder without second thoughts. Definitely not kids to invite to your child’s next birthday party.
