Cassie Keet’s ‘ABIGAIL BEFORE BEATRICE’ (2025) – Movie Review

There are many times when I felt like I was left unfulfilled by a film. Sometimes, I have to pay close attention because if I am not enjoying a movie, my attention span says, “Squirrel.” Abigail Before Beatrice, gave me a lot of hope from the general idea at first; however, that did not last long. Sometimes we screen movies, and it just doesn’t quite hit. Abigail Before Beatrice is held as a think piece, and think pieces really don’t interest me too much. However, I will stop being mean and the film definitely deserves a reaction.

Synopsis

An isolated woman is confronted by her past when a fellow former cult member reaches out with news that their leader has been released from prison early.

Cassie Keet directed the film. It stars Olivia Taylor Dudley, Riley Dandy, and Shayn Herndon.

A Missed Opportunity

The premise of the story was great. I was original and detailed, and that’s where it lost me. I was never one to be able to follow through with a movie of this type. However, I can say I had high hopes at first, but about 45 minutes into the movie, you can tell it’s gonna be a drawn-out idea to make this film almost 2 hours long. I get what they were trying to do, but it was just killed by dialogue. When there is too much of a story involved, I get really restless because I do this for the love of the horror genre.

Abigail Before Beatrice was a dull ride into someone’s psyche. I am mentally ill, I know this all too well. It was almost as if the story was built to be the main focus here—another movie where I waited for 2 hours for something to happen. When the film did start to pick up, it was too late; I was already sold on my thoughts about it. Though the kills looked great, they were only featured when I had already made my decision that it was kind of dull.

I won’t put down the passion here. They really tried to make a great movie, and to some people, it’s fantastic.  Everyone gave their best shot, and I will admit, the cast knew the assignment and aced that test. I just wish I could be more positive about this film. Though I am on a complete crusade for the idea that Abigail Before Beatrice had so much potential, it just didn’t completely keep my attention.

In The End

As I said before, everyone was passionate about their character. To me, that’s what thriller movies are. In their mind, they are making art, and I give everyone credit. It just wasn’t for me, and that’s not saying others won’t enjoy it. I am simply saying that this film could have swept me off my feet with just a little more tension.

Although the film is listed as a thriller, I don’t really see why. I have ranted enough about the same things, so I will leave you with this. Even if you try hard, some people just don’t buy in. I am one of those people. Abigail Before Beatrice gets an A for effort, and it’s gonna attract quite a crowd. The film does deserve love.

About Craig Lucas

I hail from rural PA where there isn't much to do except fixate on something. Horror was, and still is my fixation. I have 35 years of horror experience under my belt, I love the horror community and it loves me.
