Marcel Walz’s ‘BRUTE 1976’ (2025) – Movie Review

I came into this movie alone and extremely excited by the preview. After watching it, I can definitely say that Brute 1976 fits its name well. The film is giving “Camp Slashers” a run for their money. Though it may not meet the brutality of the Terrifier franchise, it will leave you extremely uncomfortable. You will be afraid of those weekend getaways where everyone is targeted. Brute 1976 left me completely full on the type of horror I love.

Synopsis

In 1976 a group of people in the desert for a photo shoot stumble upon an abandoned town called Savage. But they are not alone. A family of masked psychopaths have claimed Savage as their own and are hell bent on living up to its name

Marcel Walz directed the film. It stars Adriane McLean, Sarah French, and Gigi Gustin.

At first, I was worried it was gonna be another A24 movie. My relationship with A24 is a love-hate one. However, I was completely wrong on how this would play out. In return, the movie was extremely unavoidable, even during the kills. You may want to pop your popcorn early with a movie like Brute 1976. It is not because the movie is almost two hours long that it doesn’t feel like it. Before you realize what’s going on, you are already rooting for the bad guy. For me, that’s common; I am always let down by who survives these movies. They make you want to relate to the monster in the shadows.

The Rundown

The film is a homage to all those movies that defined the subgenre of a killer running around in a long-forgotten town. It sets you up early, so you are not waiting 45 minutes for the first kill. They come out strong out of the gate. Brute 1976 is a film for all those little horror kids who grew up to be hard to please with horror.

Brute 1976 will delve deep into your psyche. You don’t have to have an “education” to enjoy this film. I really can’t say anything about it except that I ate crow. Brute 1976i s going to be a part of my physical collection, and to be honest, I would say one out of fifty isn’t worth the time at all. However, with this film, the whole idea you had gets thrown out the window. You really aren’t expecting what happens.

It’s like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, only the entire family is a group of Leatherfaces.

In The End

In the end, I can say that the film brought back all those slasher movies I grew up watching, and I am still very picky about that. I love the big three (Jason, Michael, and Freddy); however, there aren’t many others that I delve right into.  Brute 1976 is right up there with the icons of new age horror.

Most of us can safely say that this movie got pretty extreme at points, and sometimes, I had to look away because some of the kills made me cringe. I mean, I had to look away and close my eyes, all of you men reading this, the idea of what happens is generally sick and twisted.

About Craig Lucas

I hail from rural PA where there isn't much to do except fixate on something. Horror was, and still is my fixation. I have 35 years of horror experience under my belt, I love the horror community and it loves me.
