This Isn’t A Music Act: József Gallai’s ‘THE BLACK EYED CHILDREN’ (2026)

,József Gallai’s The Black Eyed Children is a movie that I will do my best to be fair with. I will explain my reasoning through the next few paragraphs to try to figure out the plot. The film left me with a hunger for more; I am always fair and try the film once, and unfortunately, I don’t think I could watch it again. Not that it is a bad movie by any means. It is still pretty damn good.

Is it horror? It’s more of a suspense thriller with a bit of horror here and there. I still won’t judge; a lot of people like that.

Let’s get into the review.

Synopsis

A young woman takes a job at an autumn camp in the woods, only to arrive to find that all the children have mysteriously disappeared. But as night falls, much to her dismay, some of them return.

The Rundown

Two reasons made me lose a bit of interest: the dialogue, and the big reveal that is 10 minutes before the movie ends. However, the search party does make sense. I have two daughters, and I would easily, without a second thought, hunt the ends of the earth if they disappeared.

Personally, I have seen the story over and over again. However, they made it look like a news report, which saved the story just a bit for me. The movie tries very hard to make the idea seem real, but it got a little too clueless, even the build-up. I don’t exactly have a favorite storyline, but that isn’t why I watch horror movies. I just enjoy the scariness and gore fests when I have a bad day all around. It actually saves my mood.

As much as I love found footage, a lot of them get redundant. The Black Eyed Children wasn’t the easiest watch for me, but in the end, I support this film completely.

In The End

This film is someone’s passion, their purpose in life. You can tell there was a lot of heart into the film. I believe we are here to make our own interests, our own taste. It is uneasy to think about, and kind of soaked in my own purpose. I wish there were even more heart into the story. One imagines there may be a sequel? There’s no way I wouldn’t. At least you’ve understood my own fandom and wouldn’t mind a sequel at all.

I watch clowns meet their brutal end and shocking amounts of gore, but I know a lot of people who don’t. That doesn’t mean I am going to berate them or throw a temper tantrum. My tastes may be picky that way, but I still believe in the good of art without demands on how it looks. I would suggest this film for someone looking for a good thriller they can piece together.

This is horror, it’s supposed to be fun, you know? Not everyone is forced to share the same interests. This is a culture with hundreds of tons of sub-genres to make everyone happy in their own taste. This film wasn’t 100% mine, but it just may be yours.

About Craig Lucas

I hail from rural PA where there isn't much to do except fixate on something. Horror was, and still is my fixation. I have 35 years of horror experience under my belt, I love the horror community and it loves me.
