Final Destination 2

Two Decades Of Trauma: ‘FINAL DESTINATION 2’ (2003) Turns 20

That Death needed a sequel, so Final Destination 2 was released on January 31, 2003. The film stars Ali Larter (Final Destination 2000, House on Haunted Hill 1999), A.J. Cook (The Virgin Suicides 1999, Wishmaster 3 2001), Michael Landes (Lakeview Terrace 2008), and Tony Todd (Candyman 1992, The Crow 1994). David R. Ellis (Snakes on a Plane 2006) directed the film.

Here’s a look at the trailer!

Terror On The Highway

It seems only appropriate to revisit the trauma surrounding the opening scene of the movie to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Does anyone else still have that feeling of dread when a semi-truck carrying logs passes you on the highway? This PTSD response is almost assuredly the result of watching Final Destination 2. There are not many horror movies that have such a strong lasting effect on their audience. Oh, how this haunts me!

Behind The Scenes

Speaking of logs… The infamous crash scene at the beginning of Final Destination 2 was actually supposed to use real logs. These real logs were tested and apparently, they didn’t have the bounce needed for the scene, so that idea was vetoed. In the end, CGI logs were used in that scene in the movie.

The disturbing opening scene is considered by many to be the greatest car crash scene in movie history. Final Destination 2 was nominated for an MTV Movie Award for Best Action Sequence. The intense anxiety-inducing opening sequence is definitely a horror gem that has not been topped in the last 20 years.

On a sad note, the idea for the accident scene was actually based on a real-life crash. On March 14, 2002, there was a 125-car pile-up on interstate 75 in Ringgold, Georgia. A severe fog caused this accident by limiting visibility. Four people died.
