Wow, I’m super impressed. Five twisted tales of terror, The Mortuary Collection, transports you back to anthology films of the ’70s with “loving inspiration from EC horror comics, Peter Jackson, Steven Spielberg, and the power of storytelling, and is a Halloween classic in the making.” I loved everything about The Mortuary Collection and it’s one of the best anthologies I’ve seen in a long time.
This amazing anthology is the feature debut from writer/director Ryan Spindell, who also contributed to Quibi and Sam Raimi’s celebrated 50 States of Fright series. The film stars beloved character actor Clancy Brown (The Highlander, The Shawshank Redemption), widely recognized as one of the most prolific and versatile performers in Hollywood. Alongside Brown stars Caitlin Fisher (Teen Wolf), Jacob Elordi (Euphoria), Barak Hardley (SPELL), Sarah Hey (BRAID), and Christine Kilmer. It is produced by Spindell, Allison Friedman, and T. Justin Ross with special effects from the Academy Award Winning company Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc.
Synopsis for The Mortuary Collection
A young drifter applies for a job at the local mortuary and meets an eccentric mortician (Clancy Brown) who chronicles the strange history of the town through a series of twisted tales, each more terrifying than the last.
I could not get enough of this anthology… I never wanted it to end. Every story is delightfully twisted and morbidly entertaining. Each seems to have a general theme of “be careful what you wish for with” but with a twist and it was awesome. All of the performances were amazing and the cinematography, imagery, and overall creepy atmosphere were perfect. It reminded me of older anthologies like Creepshow and Body Bags, with a new age Crypt Keeper. Clancy Brown is everything and I can’t picture a better person to play Montgomery Dark.
I loved every story in The Mortuary Collection, however, I do have a favorite. Without spoiling anything. It’s the one when a sorority boy who goes against the wishes of his new sexual partner finds himself in a world of confusion and trouble. It was brilliant, hilarious, and the best dose of KARMA ever.
Although each segment is way different than the next, they all tie together in their own way, with a wraparound story that will send shivers down your spine with its spectacular twisted uniqueness.
Final Thoughts
Sam Raimi called The Mortuary Collection, “A twisted tapestry of grisly fun and endlessly inventive terror.” I completely agree. It is one of the best anthologies I’ve seen in a long time and I want more. I hope there is a sequel because we need quality anthologies like this. I will definitely be watching again soon, probably on Halloween! It is now available on Shudder, so make sure to check it out!
