I’ve been following PJ Starks filmmaking since Volumes of Blood. Way back in the day. I remember when news first came out about New Fears Eve and how amazing it looked. Recently I was given the opportunity to check out New Fears Eve. Read on for my thoughts.
Synopsis
The film follows three best friends who involuntarily prepare for Hooper Industries’ annual New Year’s Eve party, which turns deadly when a murderer sets his sights on them.
New Fears Eve was directed by Eric Huskisson (13 Slays Till Christmas) and PJ Starks (Volumes of Blood) from a script by Starks. The film stars Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Dave Sheridan (Scary Movie), Hannah Fierman (V/H/S/), Lily Claire Harvey (Hinsdale House), Turner Vaughn, Jeffrey Reddick, Roni Jonah (Slaughterhouse Slumber Party), Matthew Tichenor, Jason Crowe (The Art of Killing), Mason Roberts (Sharks of the Corn), Sonya Delormier (Angel) and Emily McAnulty (Mr Buzzkill).

If Kevin Smith ever made a raunchy slasher film, it would be something like New Fears Eve. The film’s humor reminds me a lot of the View Askewniverse. The humor comes from the characters, who they are and their interactions. Every character has their own unique feel and delivery. I really loved the core trio of characters Leslie, Brian and Moses played by Lily Claire Harvey, Turner Vaughn and Matthew Tichenor. They have a very lived in rapport, like they’ve been friends forever and they really keep each other on their toes. The film has a meta sense to it, in that their is a self awareness to what is going on. I really enjoyed the cameos from Dave Sheridan, Felissa Rose and Jeffrey Reddick.

The kills, for the most part, keep things pretty serious and brutal, which I loved, while the film as a whole has a great sense of humor that evens things out well. This makes New Fears Eve a really fun watch because you never know what’s going to come next. It definitely keeps you on your toes. In addition to the cameos it was nice to see so many actors I liked it one place: Jason Crowe, Roni Jonah, Sonya Delormier Reed and Hannah Fierman. They definitely didn’t disappoint. If I had one complaint it’s that we don’t really get a whole lot of answers as the reveals are all set to tease a sequel. That being said I didn’t mind so much as I loved the film and would love to see it blossom into a franchise.
Final Thoughts
New Fears Eve is a twisted, gory slasher film with a great sense of humor and a wonderful cast.
