Timo Vuorensola’s ‘ALTERED’ (2025) – Movie Review

As humans we tend to focus on our differences instead of the things we have in common. This is especially true when it comes to politics, economics, and class. Altered explores the ways we are divided and shows that humanity is stronger when it is united.

Here are by thoughts on Altered.

Synopsis

In an alternate present, genetically enhanced humans dominate society. Outcasts Leon and Chloe fight for justice against corrupt politicians exploiting genetic disparity, risking everything to challenge the oppressive system.

Altered was written and directed by Timo Vuorensola (Iron Sky). The film stars Ton Felton (Harry Potter series), Aggy K. Adams (The Witcher) , Richard Brake (Three From Hell), Elizaveta Bugulova,  and Igor Zhizhikin (Kingdom of the Crystal Skull).

I’ll be the first to admit that I haven’t followed Tom Felton’s career post Harry Potter so I didn’t really know what to expect from him going into Altered. That being said, I was pretty impressed. He gives a strong and captivating performance. This is bolstered by the chemistry he has with the other actors, specifically Elizaveta Bugulova and Aggy K. Adams.

Elizaveta Bugulova plays Chloe, a young girl who Felton’s Leon has been tasked with looking out for since her parents have been taken away. Their relationship is very much an older brother/younger sister dynamic and it really helps draw you into the world of the film and make you care about what’s going on.

Aggy K. Adams plays Mira, a genetically altered human who works as a singer. She’s on of the few people who doesn’t see the non genetically altered as less then. I really enjoyed how the film brought Leon, Chloe and Mira together and the relationship it builds between the three.

I really liked the overall story of a world where you are separated by your ability to be genetically altered or not. Those who can are altered before birth. Those that can’t are regulated to their own little area, completely segregated from the rest of society and seen as less then and discriminated against. I loved how Leon and Chloe became unwitting heroes just by being at the wrong place at the right time.

As someone who is disabled, it was refreshing for Altered to have a protagonist, Leon, who is physically disabled. You don’t see a lot of that in Sci Fi Action films. I loved the way the story played out and how it wrapped things up enough but left things open for more, which I would love to see

Final Thoughts

Altered is a Sci Fi Action Thriller with a wonderful cast playing complex characters that ground the story and make you care. I love the chemistry they had together and I loved how the story played out. Highly recommended.
