‘Midnighters’ (2018) New Year, New Movie Review

Starting a new year for most people means a fresh start. People believe a new year can bring new beginnings. This is their chance for a do-over. “New Year, New me, blah, blah, blah”. We’ve all heard the new year’s resolutions a thousand times, but 99.9% don’t even make it past January. You just start all over again the following year. Well, I have a resolution for all of you: watch Julius Ramsey’s (The Walking Dead) latest film Midnighters. Let’s break it down and you’ll see why you should take this resolution to heart!

Midnighters

Official Synopsis of Midnighters:

Midnight, New Year’s Eve: when all the hopes of new beginnings come to life – except for Lindsey and Jeff Pittman, whose strained marriage faces the ultimate test after they cover up a terrible crime and find themselves entangled in a Hitchcockian web of deceit and madness.

What Works:

First and foremost, I just have to point out that I’m in love with the fact that this movie is a horror/thriller that takes place on New Year’s Eve. I’m a total sucker for holiday movies and this one did not disappoint in the slightest. Midnighters is more than just your run of the mill holiday film. It has twists and turns in almost every frame that will keep you guessing from start to finish.

Midnighters also stars some extremely talented actors and actresses including the radiant Alex Essoe (Starry Eyes), the stunning Perla Haney-Jardine (Kill Bill Vol. 2), veteran actor Ward Horton (Annabelle, 2014), and, in his first feature-length film, Dylan McTee. I think he will have a very successful career in this industry long after the premiere of Midnighters.

The whole atmosphere of this film has a really cool, dark undertone to it. Director Julius Ramsey is extraordinary at keeping his audience on their toes. I think this is a character-driven film and, to be honest, I’d watch a film based off of any of them. However… I’m not sure I’d want to ring in the new year with them!

The stand-out performance goes to Ward Horton. His character was beyond surprising and so entertaining. He had me on the edge of my seat. I really can’t wait to see what the whole cast and crew have for upcoming projects as they all played their roles to perfection.

Midnighters

What Doesn’t Work:

There really isn’t anything. The performances are top notch. The characters are well developed. The twists keep you guessing. I guess if I had to be really nitpicky and say anything: I wish it had more focus on the concept of it being New Year’s Eve and a New Year since the title is Midnighters. It would make more sense to play up at that angle, but it’s hardly amake or break issue. It’s more of a personal preference as I’m a huge holiday horror/thriller film fanatic. For me the twists and turns far outweigh that one, little thing.

Final Thoughts:

If you are looking for a fun and twisty horror story, Midnighters is absolutely for you! It’s a fun thrill ride that will trick your brain for an hour and thirty-four minutes. Make this one resolution you keep this year: watch Midnighters! It will be in Theaters and available On Demand, and in Digital HD on March 2.
