Wuxia is a genre that up until now I wasn’t familiar with. Wuxia is a genre of Chinese fiction that follows the adventures of Martial Artists in ancient China. Invincible Swordsman was my introduction to the genre.
So what did I think of the Invincible Swordsman? Read on to find out.
Synopsis
Fabled swordsman Linghu Chong was ready to retire his sword when a chance encounter with a dangerous cult leader forced him back into action. As the evil Invincible East threatens the peaceful realm of Jianghu with her demon cult, Chong picks up his weapon and defends the land with a ragtag crew of misfit warriors in this mystical wuxia throwback.
Invincible Swordsman was directed by Luo Yiwei (Swords Drawn) from a script by Louis Cha and Jing Wong. The film stars Zhang Yuqi (The Golden Monk), Tim Huang (Creation of the Gods franchise), Terrence Yin (Octopus with Broken Arms, Anaconda), Xuan Lu (Midnight Hair), Yun Qianqian (New Kung Fu Master franchise), Zhang Lu (Tomb Mystery), and Cai Xiangyu (Sakra).

I had one minor complaint about Invincible Swordsman. There was a tons of characters and it was really hard to keep track of who’s who. When a new character was introduced it showed their name on screen, usually with a few characters being introduced in a row. Usually the name would leave the screen before I even had a chance to read it. I found this a little frustrating. Now that the minor complaint is out of the way I can focus on the positive. Invincible Swordsman, for the most part, has a fun and playful tone throughout. It’s just a blast to watch and it really doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Invincible Swordsman is big on action. The film is set up in such a way that it’s basically a bunch of huge action set pieces broken up with quieter moments. The action is big and bombastic, with most of the scenes having a live action cartoon vibe. We don’t really get to know any of the characters too in depth, they basically are their personality and abilities. That being said the characters have tons of personality. Most of the main characters spend a lot of their time before, during and after fights drinking wine and talking about wine. I found this pretty funny. While there wasn’t a lot of story, I did enjoy what it had. I really liked the set up they did for a potential sequel. Given how things ended I would love to see it.
Final Thoughts
Invincible Swordsman has a fairly basic story but what it lacks in story it makes up for it in action and fun characters.Recommended.
