Ballistic Interactive’s ‘HellSign’ – Video Game Review

HellSign is an isometric paranormal activity hunting game developed by Ballistic Interactive, one that separates itself from any other in the genre. Read on for my thoughts.

The Gameplay Doesn’t Disappoint

Every mission in HellSign is reminiscence of an episode of Buffy or Supernatural, taking the player to houses haunted by multiple kinds of horrors. Each house you enter will have a different type of supernatural presence to treat your mind and body. Inspect every corner of the map and uncover any paranormal activity using various tools. Use a Cryptonomicon to identify key traits of the enemy’s presence. Use weapons to defeat that presence before the evil gets you. Utilize the skill tree to your play style, explore other skill sets and enjoy the immersive story.

This Game Rocks… Literally

One of the first things you will notice is an excellent soundtrack with lots of heavy metal. Nothing better than hunting ghosts, and other spooks while thrashing to the music. This is some of the best metal I’ve heard in any independent game.

Story That Tears At Your Soul

Starting the game, you witness your own death while demons tear your soul out. Then, you’re thrown into a nightmare of scouting sites for a team of hunters, all with brutal language and a story that will raise the hairs on the back of your neck. The sites you explore will have you finding clues to the reason your soul is damned. With multiple characters to try (I can even see them adding more in the future), HellSign will do well in the horror genre.

Final Thoughts

In the investigative part of HellSign, I was finding myself straining to find the clues, which made it slow and tedious for me, yet I admit that I am not good in those types of situations. The combat against the creatures was the part that got me to keep going. Every mission had me thinking I was playing a Buffy episode, which was my favorite thing about this game. I do look forward to future updates, which I have noticed get better week after week. You can purchase HellSign for $15 on steam, and I think that it is well worth the cash.
