Pay The Price: DIY vs. Pop Up Halloween Stores

Every year, I hear the same old story about the arrival of Big Box pop-up stores, and I end up overspending on a pair of socks. It’s great that these places pop up, keeping the legacy of Halloween alive. What sucks is, well, the places sell out quickly on everything cool. If you don’t get there in the first three days, you are ascrewed. It is a fun place to walk around, and I get that, it’s like a little day trip because they have so much, and they all have a few items that the others don’t.

You never know what will show up
Pop Ups Are Still Pretty Cool

While all this is extremely popular right before Halloween, I do my best at cons to find creativity. Is it licensed? I plead the fifth. If you can get past the morals, you are setting yourself up for some of the coolest stuff you could get. I always prefer to give my money to someone who worked on something original, changing those that come in trucks to be unloaded, and in those boxes are something you’re gonna see a million times. As a supporter of underground artists, this genre gets extra special love from crafters all around the world.

I even make Perler bead patterns. There is something for everyone, from shirts to light-up VHS tapes of all your horror favorites; there really are things for every age. I am not putting down pop-ups. However, I get tired of hearing about it when it opens. That sounds arrogant, but in reality, I come for collectibles and not the costumes. However, I do love their shirts, but the price is crazy. As it is with all of those places. There is no magic because all these kids know what to expect.

I’m somewhat of an artist myself

I am a rabid collector of really cool and creative items from Terrifier down to Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things. These are the opportunities I stumble upon new artists every year. Another good way to find these cool things is Etsy. That should be obvious; however, not everyone gets that Halloween fever. They just want to get spooky one month out of the year. Sometimes I am jealous of them, not because they don’t get the fever, but because they also don’t hurt their bank account.  I have no disrespect to pop-up stores; I just want people to know that there’s a whole world beyond that store if you scour the internet enough. There are obvious sites, such as Etsy again. Other than that, start going to conventions and see the dedication you need to inspire you. Plus, you find really cool stuff.

Talking ‘Bout My Generation

I guess I was just raised in the generation that fell in love with ghosts, ghouls, and any other monsters. Now I create cool things with Perler beads, which keeps me confident and motivated to show people my talent. I am not getting free PR through this; I just want to spread the good word of collectibles that are one of a kind and took a fair amount of work. All we can do is keep pushing to support local artists in general. There are a lot of ways to express yourself. You won’t find that watching animatronics and crowds. Keep creativity alive, give those people the confidence in their items that sell. There is no CEO, just us and our projects. I will never want it any other way.

About Craig Lucas

I hail from rural PA where there isn't much to do except fixate on something. Horror was, and still is my fixation. I have 35 years of horror experience under my belt, I love the horror community and it loves me.
