‘VHS – We’re Gonna Need Some Bigger Riffs’ (2019) Album Review

There has always been a deep connection between death metal and horror movies. Death metal lyrics have always stemmed from horror movies. Mortician’s “Chainsaw Dismemberment” is about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Cannibal Corpse’s “Code Of The Slashers” is about slasher movies in general.

VHS

There are quite a few bands on the scene today who base their whole presentation on horror movies. One of those bands is the Canadian death metal band VHS. They have just released their third full-length album “We’re Gonna Need Some Bigger Riffs.” Most of the album is centered around horror movies that take place near the water. The song “Marine Monstrosity” is about Jaws, and “Bubbling Black Mass” is about The Raft from Creepshow 2.

The album, for the most part, is death metal, with leanings towards grindcore. There are even a few songs like “Rooting For The Villian” where they slow things down a bit, and almost feels like doom metal. Some of the more hard-hitting tour de force songs would be “Let’s Get Gruesome” and “An Old Lady And Her Crocodile.” They start out blistering fast, and they never let up until the song is over. It’s a great album from the first song to the last.

If you love old school death metal and 80’s horror movies, then VHS might be your new favorite band. Besides having three full-length albums, VHS also has a slew of singles, ep’s, and splits. You can get some of these albums by going to their Bandcamp page at vhshorror.bandcamp.com.
