Awkward Premonitions: Orin Black’s ‘THE BABYSITTER MURDERS: TIMING IS OFF’ (2024)

I always love short films because they can pack a big story into just 8-10 minutes. I still watch a lot of them, and I could piece very few together while still enjoying them. Let’s face it, some films were designed to attract you through a 2-hour runtime for a 5-minute scene you like.  The Babysitter Murders: Timing is Off is a true winner.

Let’s get into the review.

Synopsis

A babysitter experiencing time distortions sees a news report of her own murder.

The Babysitter Murders: Timing is Off actually made me feel as if I could witness my own demise, to stand back, waiting for the moment you realize it’s coming. The short film delivers a lot to unpack in the 8-minute runtime. If you look real hard, you may see a distorted view of your own life. As someone with a mental illness, I know how wild things can get.

We all have that moment that sticks out to us, good or bad, in every film or even in real-life stories. The film isn’t based on so much of a horror aspect. Did that make The Babysitter Murders: Timing Is Off need a scary setting? It didn’t have to. The film relies on the unsettling thought that someone could be right behind you and how quickly things turn for the worse. The Babysitter Murders: Timing Is Off showed not only a horrifying reality, but the film also relies on it. That fact left me even more wondering: how can they do so much with so little?

I have seen the concept in several full-length features that can’t even fit their story into 8 minutes, and to be honest, a lot of those feature-length films don’t compare even halfway to some of the shortest stories I have ever seen. What also impressed me was that damn cigarette ash that makes me think of Wendy Torrance. I am sure it’s the first thing people will pick up on. To die violently with police just around the corner. It was still not safe, and there was nothing anyone could have done

Still, somehow they made it pretty clear that they were here to do business. Honestly, one of my biggest fears is a home invasion, for the simple fact of what you can do if they turn in with no phone lines or charged batteries. In this film, the victims have everything they need, and also some eyes in the back of their heads. To witness my own death would be absolutely unsettling, especially if I am already dead; however, no complaints here. I would be too busy trying to get autographs of all my favorite monsters before they impale me on a fence post.

That’s pretty much my takeaway from the film: don’t even trust the safety of approaching sirens, knowing it was too late as they cover your body with a sheet. I am the kind of person who has to run up the basement steps when I turn the light off to hide from the shadow man. Personally, I would fool them and push them down those same basement steps. The Babysitter Murders: Timing Is Off should be an instant classic short film. The mind of someone who had anything to do with this film is impressive to me.
