Disappeared: Markian Tarasiuk’s ‘HUNTING MATTHEW NICHOLS’ (2024) – Review

Some things are better off in the past, forgotten after the world’s technology, as Hunting Matthew Nichols nailed it. The style of the movie kept me in a trance, following the movie in my head like a tidal wave of emotion. The entire movie caught me by surprise in so many ways. I would absolutely watch this film over and over.

Let’s get into the review.

Synopsis

Two decades after her brother mysteriously disappeared on Vancouver Island, a documentary filmmaker sets out to solve his missing person’s case. When a disturbing piece of evidence is revealed, she comes to believe he might still be alive.

Something Different

What I love about this movie is the reality of kidnapping on Unsolved Mysteries and ghastly ghouls in my generation. It was a pandemic, kids went missing every single day, and rolled right into that. The first film of this type was The Blair Witch Project. In fact, it kind of looks very close to that icon of horror movies, which created a whole generation of movies. Movie after movie, and so on. We are now in the found footage trend. It seems like everyone just makes movies on their phones.

I’m just going to clear the air; a lot of found footage films suck. What saved me here was the news breaks; I related it to the WNUF Halloween Special. I get so many memories that linger in your head unknowingly. This movie has everything wrapped up in a neat little package. There is reality, fantasy, found footage monster, and I support it. Hunting Matthew Nichols made me fear for my own daughters, because it can happen that quickly to anyone. That is one downside. Although I loved the movie, that was one thought I don’t want to flash before my eyes. However, I don’t really judge movies without seeing them at least once, and I was totally slapped in the face by this movie.

In The End

In the end, it was not so uncomfortable to watch the end scenes. The movie got into my head, remembering our parents not letting us leave the yard, then we became young adults, hiding bruises from trying to jump a car on my bike.  The quick ending, which kind of let me down, but also what I am looking at, is tense enough. You can’t tell what the monster is, a werewolf? Vampire? Or is it other humans leading a happy life. that got stripped away?

Hunting Matthew Nichols is a movie every parent can watch, so they can understand why we won’t let the ones we love go anywhere alone. Of course, now I have two teenagers, smarter than I could ever be. This movie is a reminder that life isn’t sunshine and rainbows, or maybe put your phone down and enjoy the simple moments.

Hunting Matthew Nichols will also teach all of us to put the electronics out and breathe a new moment in time. We also only have a temporary time with our kids; they can be a handful, even more than a handful. We need to do better with our kids. That is how much Hunting for Matthew Nichols affected me.

Watch and learn.
