Review: A24’s ‘Death Of A Unicorn’

Death of a Unicorn, a new horror comedy from A24, hit theaters this past weekend. A24 has delivered superb films, thus generating excitement for Death of a Unicorn. Does this creature feature deliver?

Trailer:

Death of a Unicorn was released March 28, 2025. It stars Paul Rudd (Ant-Man franchise), Jenna Ortega (Scream franchise), Will Poulter (Midsommar 2019), Téa Leoni (Jurassic Park III 2001), and Anthony Carrigan (Satanic 2016). The film is directed by Alex Scharfman (Resurrection 2022).

When a man and his daughter accidentally hit and kill a unicorn with their car, his boss tries to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties — with horrific results.

What Worked

Death of a Unicorn provides a well-paced plot delivered flawlessly. While the story of the rich being corrupt has been done plenty of times in films, this one has a twist. Making a mythical creature that is typically thought of as peaceful a monster is brilliant.

The acting in Death of a Unicorn is exceptional. Both Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega continue to deliver the caliber of performances that crowds expect. Will Poulter leans into his character and effortlessly delivers multiple hysterical one-liners with physical comedy. Téa Leoni wasn’t shabby delivering witty dialogue, too.  Although, the standout performance from Death of a Unicorn would have to be Anthony Carrigan. Most would recognize him from the television series, Barry. In Death of a Unicorn, he plays a butler and has a way of delivering his lines with a dry humor.
What about the horror? Well, there is no shortage of gore, not to mention some pleasantly placed jump scares too, which, I admit, got me.

What Didn’t Work

It seems apparent that the budget was spent on the cast of Death of a Unicorn. Thus, my assumption is there was not much of a budget for CGI. I kid you not, the first image that came to mind with the big reveal of the unicorn was the donkey from Shrek (2001).

Overall Thoughts

Death of a Unicorn is an enjoyable film. The acting, story, comedy, and gore far exceeded the poor CGI. With this film, A24 delivers another hit that is highly recommended.
