WTF! (2017) Movie Review

I can honestly say that if I survived a forest-related horror movie scenario once, you wouldn’t catch me at a cabin in the woods for the rest of my life. So what happens when a final girl goes on a graduation trip with her friends in the new horror film WTF!? You guessed it, more bloodshed. Read on for my thoughts on WTF!

WTF! was directed by Peter Herro from a script he wrote with Adam Buchalter and Christopher Centanni. The film stars Callie Ott (The Horror 2015), Nick Reilly, Andrea Hunt (Awaken The Shadowman 2017), Benjamin Norris (13/13/13 2013), Sarah Agor (Hatchet II 2010), Adam Foster, and Johnny James Fiore.

Three years ago, twenty-two year old girl next door Rachel barely survived a brutal massacre that left all of her friends murdered. Time has passed, and Rachel has moved on, but unfortunately her close friends are spending Spring Break in a secluded house in the woods, and they have cordially invited her to join. She would never have accepted the invitation if she realized that another bloodbath would be showing up as plus one. Once Rachel and her friends arrive at the cabin, the partying, sex, and…terror begins. From girls’ only pillow fights to debauchery in a bedroom, it’s going to be a blast…aside from the stabbing, flesh melting, and castration. Seven friends will go into a secluded house for the best Spring Break of their lives, but only one will be alive to post about it on Facebook the next week, as Rachel’s biggest fears become a reality once again! Can Rachel survive another bloody massacre?

What I Liked

The idea of following a final girl is a cool concept that has been done before in the past (Last Girl Standing and Take Back The Knife). Here they spend quite a bit of time focusing on the post-traumatic stress disorder that Rachel suffers as a result of the death of here friends years ago. The kills include a knife in the back, a throat slashing, a castration, a girl’s face being burnt off, and a gutting. The ending features an insane twist that I didn’t see coming at all and it elevated the movie a notch or two. The performance of the killer at end of the movie is pretty fucking creepy.

What I Didn’t Like

Some of the kill scenes were shot pretty dark, some to the point where it was hard to tell what was going on. The characters were unlikable, which in and of itself isn’t a problem for me. I hated a lot of the characters in Sleepaway Camp, but still love the movie. The problem was that they were not only unlikable, but they were also obnoxious to the point where I didn’t care about them at all. I would have liked the killer to have a little more motivation beyond just them being crazy.

Final Thoughts

WTF! is a solid slasher movie that’s elevated by a killer twist ending. While I would have liked more motivation for the killer, the kills are bloody, mean spirited and fun, which made the film an enjoyable experience overall. I wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel. If you dig nasty and mean spirited slasher films, be sure to give WTF! a shot.
