Truth or Dare (2013) A Truthful Review

I always find it interesting when a film maker takes something from my childhood and expands on it, making it truly their own. For example, everyone knows the game Truth or Dare. Everyone has their own variations of it. I recently got to sit down and watch Jessica Cameron’s take on it and I’m not going to sugar coat anything. Here’s the absolute truth…Truth or Dare is astonishing. I watched Truth or Dare, not really knowing anything about it beforehand. What can I say? This movie blew my mind in all the right ways! Let me tell you all the reasons why this movie represents horror to its very core.

Jessica Cameron’s directorial debut Truth or Dare premiered at the Arizona Underground Film Festival on September 13th, 2013, where it went on to win Best Horror Feature. It was co-written by Cameron and Jonathan Scott Higgins. Since its debut, Truth or Dare has gone on the film festival circuit, scoring up 9 wins ranging from Best Director to Best Actor and Best Actress… not to mention, it won the Audience Choice Award for Favorite Feature at The PollyGrind Underground Film Festival. After viewing the film, it’s no surprise why it won all these awards.

Official Synopsis:

Six college kids find internet stardom when they make “Truth or Dare” videos with a violent twist. It is all fun and games until their number one fan decides he wants to play by his own rules.

I am going to give you my top five reasons why you not only need to watch but also go and buy Truth or Dare immediately:

1. The amazing acting talents of Ryan Kiser who portrays Derik B. Smith AKA The Deranged Fan. The amount of crazy he brought to this role was out of this world! It was a standout performance and clearly shows that he deserved by his Best Actor win at Shockfest Film Festival in 2014.
2. The whole concept of the Dare-Devils took Truth or Dare to a whole different playing field.
3. The truths are just as shocking as the dares. You would think that they would be more mild but in this film, there is absolutely no holding back. Each round is insanely crazy and things happen that you would never expect.
4. Do you want cringe-worthy? Man or Woman? It will make all sexes close their eyes, hold their breath and scream, “Oh, my God! Did that just happen?” Seriously, it’s no joke! It is truly bloody fantastic in the best – or worst – possible way. This film will not disappoint. The kills are so gory and inventive. Let’s just say I will never look at a corkscrew or wine bottle the same way ever again!
5. Jessica Cameron. She literally has it all. The acting, the directing, the writing…what can’t this woman do?

Final Thoughts:

Truth or Dare is an absolute shocker that will not disappoint in any are.! The whole crew was fantastic! You can tell how much effort went into this film, especially the amazing casting with Heather Dorff, Ryan Kiser, Shelby Stehlin, Devanny Pinn, Brandon Van Vliet, Jesse Wilson, Buz Wallick and Jessica Cameron herself. They are all so disturbingly good! In my honest opinion, I believe Jessica Cameron is the next face of horror without a doubt in my mind. She pushes the bar. It reminds me what Wes Craven did for horror with The Last House on the Left. I am excited to see what she has coming out next and for many years to come. You truly know that a movie is great when you just sit there in awe and watch the credits roll. (By the way, these are some cool credits that are actually fun to read). So what are you waiting for?
