Race With The Devil (1975)
The next film on our list is another slow burn, but it also ends up having possibly one of the best action sequences for a genre piece. Race With the Devil stars Peter Fonda and Warren Oates as business partners and best friends who decide to take a dream vacation to Aspen, Colorado, in a brand new, top of the line RV. Along with their wives, they eventually run into trouble as they accidentally witness a sacrifice in the middle of Texas Plains country and barely make it back to a nearby small town, which is where the trouble begins. They are stalked every step of the way by the impossibly huge cult while trying to make it to a big city.
This movie is one of those rare hybrid movies that manages to not only combine horror and action, but also successfully integrates the car chase genre as well… a pretty mean feat, if I may say so! By today’s standards, this would be considered low budget fare, being made for a measly $1.7 million, but it managed to make 12 times its budget, probably due to the star power of Fonda and Oates.
Like I said before, the beginning of Race With the Devil is on the dull side, and you might be tempted to take a nap, but once the action starts, I highly suggest you stick around. The main characters manage to show a certain level of intelligence and resourcefulness that is missing in most forms of modern horror.
