PopHorror Interviews David Bohórquez, Director of ‘The Devil’s Child’

I recently had a chance to chat with David Bohórquez, the director of the new horror film, The Devil’s Child. We talked about how he got involved with filmmaking, who he would love to work with, the inspiration behind The Devil’s Child, and much more!

PopHorror – Hi David – How has 2021 been treating you so far?

David Bohórquez – Hi Tori, very good, thanks for asking. It’s been a challenging year for all of us, but my family is safe and I have been able to be active creatively, so very good so far!

PopHorror – That’s great to hear. What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

David Bohórquez – Since I was a child, I was very interested in arts, drawing, music, writing stories, etc. Years later, while I was starting my studies in graphic design, I got in love with the video class. Months later I was shooting music videos for my musician friends and a couple of years later I was jumping on the adventure of making my first feature film.

PopHorror – That’s exciting! If you could work with anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?

David Bohórquez – I would like to work with Al Pacino.

PopHorror – Great choice! Many of your films fall under the horror/thriller genre, is this a genre you enjoy? If so, what’s your favorite horror film?

David Bohórquez – I have learned to love the genre over the years. In the beginning, it was just the genre that fits the most for our production conditions: small cast, not too many extras, a genre with commercial possibilities with unknown actors, so the circumstances took me there. My favorite horror film is The Silence of the Lambs.

PopHorror – Love that one too! Tell us about your new film, The Devil’s Child.

David Bohórquez – Cherry is a young nurse that is employed at a remote house to care for a sinister old psychic named Philip. The experience, while she lives there, makes her understand that none of the events that she has experienced in life are a coincidence.

PopHorror – What inspired this film?

David Bohórquez – I developed the concept from an idea that came up in my head, a mouse trapped in an aquarium waiting to be eaten by a snake.

PopHorror – Oooh nice. How did the casting process come about?

David Bohórquez – Maria Camila, Marvens, Fiona, and German were actors that I knew before and that were willing to participate in the project even when I was just starting the writing process. Alison and Francisca are actresses that I found in a casting call we did in LA.

PopHorror – Some scenes were pretty terrifying. Which one was your favorite?

David Bohórquez – I personally like the scene where Philip manipulates Cherry and Dwayne’s dream/nightmare simultaneously the night they dance.

PopHorror – What do you hope people take away from this film?

David Bohórquez – I think the key question in the film is: Is everything already written, or do we have choice?

PopHorror – Love it! Any other projects you’d like to talk about?

David Bohórquez – I am currently working on a black and white crime/drama called GATO that I will shoot this year, and in a science fiction film called THE GOLDEN FROG that I plan to shoot in 2022.

PopHorror – Thanks again for chatting with me and I look forward to all your upcoming projects! Vertical Entertainment will release The Devil’s Child both digitally and on demand on May 7th.
