Robbie Smith’s ‘GRIEVE’ (2023): An Atmospheric Horror Drama – Review

Grieve (2023) is relatable to anyone who has experienced the loss of someone close as they understand the nightmarish existence that the monster called grief creates. This horror drama submerges the audience into this terrifying, dreary abyss.

GrieveGrieve (2023) Synopsis

Sam is grieving the tragic loss of his love. A relaxing getaway alone to his family’s forest vacation home seems what is in order to mend his sadness. Unfortunately, Sam’s grief drives him to drugs and alcohol, which blurs the lines of reality creating a nightmarish existence in this secluded landscape.

Robbie Smith wrote and directed the film. It stars Paris Peterson (Cam) and Danielle Keaton (Darkening Sky). You can watch the official trailer below:

My Thoughts

The opening scene of Grieve (2023) is so relatable for those who have experienced the intense grief of losing someone that means the world to them. Curling up into a ball, sobbing, while listening to old voicemails from that lost loved one is the only glimmer of solace to be able to grasp at. This tear-inducing scene sets the mood for the rest of the film.

Grieve (2023) creates an atmospheric horror drama that is stimulating to both the eyes and ears. The cinematography and soundtrack eloquently add to the dismal feeling of the film. The story is well orchestrated, taking the viewer on a ride along with the main character as he experiences a hellish, blurred journey of grief in a secluded forest. It is unclear to the audience if what Sam is experiencing is real or a nightmare.

Bottom line: this atmospheric horror film is definitely worth experiencing.
