Movie Review: Amber Sealey’s ‘No Man of God’ (2021) Delivers Intense Performances and Flawless Chemistry

One of my most anticipated films of 2021, was the new drama thriller that’s based on a true story, No Man of God. The film was directed by Amber Sealey and written by Kit Lesser. It stars Elijah Wood, Luke Kirby, Aleksa Palladino, and Robert Patrick.

 No Man of God

Synopsis for No Man of God

In 1980, Ted Bundy was sentenced to death by electrocution. In the years that followed, he agreed to disclose the details of his crimes, but only to one man. No Man of God is based on the true story of the strange and complicated relationship that developed between FBI agent Bill Hagmaier and an incarcerated Ted Bundy in the years leading to Bundy’s execution.

Although I’m not big into true crime like some in the horror community, I’ll admit that I do find it interesting learning more about serial killers and learning more in-depth the “why” they do these horrific acts and that is exactly what No Man of God is about. FBI agent Bill Hagmaier develops a strange and complicated relationship with Ted Bundy in order to have a better understanding of how the mind of a murderer workers, why he did it, and so on.

Over the last couple of years, a few films and series have come out about Ted Bundy that highlight different perspectives of him and how he became the monster. The chemistry between Luke Kirby as Ted Bundy and Elijah Wood as Bill Hagmaier is untouchable, flawless. They really grasped what their relationship was like, which wasn’t so much a friendship, despite Bundy calling Hagmaier his best friend, but an understanding of one another. With an amazing and emotionally-driven performance from Elijah Wood, the audience could see the pain and turmoil Hagmaier felt being so close to a killer yet the importance of doing so. Luke Kirby depicted Bundy’s mannerisms, arrogance, and charisma perfectly.

Another thing I loved about No Man of God, is that the film didn’t rely heavily on imagery or triggering material to tell the story. The true-life story is horrific enough. It also didn’t focus on his looks, charm, or the fact that women fawned over him despite all the hard facts. All of this has been grossly overdone. It just shows a more intimate and personal side to what happened before his execution. No blood or gore, just an inside look at a mad man.

If you love true crime stories with great performances, and a satisfying ending, No Man of God is for you. This film will hit Theaters, On Demand, and Digital beginning on August 27, 2021. Be sure to check it out!
