Certain movies will swim through my comfort level, sometimes even in a bad way. Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer was part of the golden days of horror. Though you knew it was just a movie, viewer discretition said otherwise. Sometimes movies want to be remembered as shocking or over the edge. I have a few things to cover on the matter, so let’s get into the review.
Synopsis
Arriving in Chicago, Henry moves in with ex-con acquaintance Otis and starts schooling him in the ways of the serial killer. The further they go in their reign of terror, the further they take things.
Breaking All The Rules
The film is kind of special to me because I always got in trouble for watching it. I can still hear my Grandma giving me grief. Though my entire family is horror lovers, even my family knows what lines to cross, hoping they won’t need to face it. She even has to walk away when the kids watch Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer. Some lines shouldn’t be added for shock value. That is the only negative found here. However, we were raised not to have feelings and keep it all in.

Another idea that is scarier than shocking. We all know those silent rules, and they broke one in a very triggering scene. Honestly, the entire scene brings in the guilt as the characters beg for their lives. All I can say is, keep an open mind and the movie turns into a roller coaster. I see it as a perfect opening, where the gore was just there; it automatically appealed to the horror movie lovers’ generation. It’s not too hard to follow along because even if it’s your first time watching, I repeat: Proceed with caution; there are scenes that can be triggering; let the rest of the film speak for itself.
A Simple Story
There is not really too much to cover without repeating myself, because I am a fanboy for trashy movies that give us nothing but love. I admit, I had to turn my head and shed a tear or two over the situation. It was tough at first, but I brushed off the childish scene like Dawn Of The Dead. But which death is worse? I would have to say that Henry won himself a contest by a million points. I guess I just got used to the shock value and saw the film for what it was.
In The End
In the end, this will always be one of my favorite movies, not in the top 20, but somewhere around there. I remember the moment I realized that Going Over the Edge gives you a good look at all the people you admire for fake blood and gummy brains to chew on. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is currently on Tubi; if you feel safe, and whether or not you heed my warning. I choose zombies that come out of the ground, and I feel the same way as Henry; it makes me want to see Robert DeNiro pulling up in a taxi as if the two films had an ongoing relationship.
It’s wild, it’s fun, and it definitely isn’t for kids. Enjoy your slap in the face of reality; I try not to blur the line.
