When The Barn was first released, I was giddy as a schoolgirl. With a strong ’80s presence, I couldn’t get enough of it. When The Barn II came into my life, they brought that magic back only stronger. With a strong cast and a great slasher storyline, The Barn II promises a gory good time, and it delivers like a punch in the face.
Let’s get into the review.
Synopsis
The Halloween ban is now lifted in Helen’s Valley, and the sorority girls of Gamma Tau Psi place Michelle in charge of their annual haunted house. Unfortunately for Michelle some uninvited trick or treaters from her past come knocking. With a villianous man named Walter (Doug Bradley) who pushes to put the ban back in place, backed up by everyones most hated neighbor, Mrs. Barnhart (Linnae Quigley). The town bumbling Mayor (Lloyd Kaufman) tries his best to please everyone.
Who will last the night with a handful of ferocious monsters on the loose with a lust for blood.
The Rundown
The most magical part of The Barn II is, well, it’s everything for me. There is tasteful gore that isn’t over the top (Sorry Damien Leone I still love you!). However; sometimes I need a change of pace, while the Terrifier franchise holds that ’90s nostalgia, The Barn is my ’80s version of that love. Everything is so perfectly placed, from the cast to the look of the monsters, there’s more than one reason to watch this film. It is simply a good time. The Barn II has a lot of surprises, even some controversial moments in the horror genre. The film breaks an unwritten rule recently placed out of kindness because the children are our future or whatever.
Lost In The ’80s
The Barn II is shot in a style that screams “straight to VHS” and I loved that entire style. Cheap movies always meant they were the best. What happened to The Barn series is it unfortunately flies under the radar for a lot of people, and they are missing out. I preach fairness so here I am to tell to that if you love all those old movies we thought were gone, there are still movies like The Barn II out in the wild, or on Tubi where all good movies go to be repeatedly watched.
There are a lot of laughs in this movie because they carried the spirit that nothing should be taken seriously. There are some that praise The Exorcist and others that praise Sleepaway Camp. If you are looking for something that is going to make complete sense, don’t bother watching. However; if you like sitting back with something to laugh at and cheer about, The Barn II is right up your alley.
In The End
I always carry my childhood styles with me. These are the movies that brought me to the genre, cheap thrills if you’d like to call it that. My love for horror started at a very young age and my family encouraged it. I have trouble sitting through a movie that takes itself seriously, I watch horror to have a good time if that makes sense. The Barn II runs on it’s own energy, the better the scene, the more it looked like the cast was enjoying every minute. The film stars a lot of people I admire and grew up looking up to. You can’t take that away from me. It is movies like The Barn II that fill that void when I’m not feeling the best.
