Hoax

‘Hoax’ (2019) Movie Review: You’re Gonna Need A Bigger Everything!

I love creature features. I also love films that take place in the woods. You always know something bad is going to happen when you mix those two. Hoax seemed like the perfect end of summer movie, but did it live up to its hype? Keep reading to find out!

The film was directed by Matt Allen and co-written by himself and Scott Park. The film stars Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog 1980, Creepshow 1982 – read our retro review here), Brian Thompson (Fright Night Part 2 1988), Ben Browder (Stargate SG-1 TV series), Cheryl Texiera (Girl Meets World TV series), Shoshana Bush (Dance Flick 2009), Hutch Dano (Zombeavers 2014 – read our review here), Matt Reidy (The Judge 2014), Anthony Ray Parker (The Matrix 1999), Christopher Soren Kelly (Infinity Chamber 2016), Ryan Lee (upcoming Qi: Spacetime Warriors), Max Decker (Muse 2017), Brian Landis Folkins (Tales From The Vault 2017) and newcomers Karen Slack and Shawn Rickel.

Synopsis for Hoax

An investigative team travels deep into the remote Colorado wilderness? after a group of young campers are viciously murdered by what may be ?Bigfoot. While the highly specialized crew? searches for evidence, they find themselves in a fight for survival ?against the legendary beast. What they encounter turns out to be more? unexpected and dangerous than anything they could have ever imagined.

Hoax isn’t one that isn’t meant to be taken too seriously. It’s a fun horror comedy with plenty of the Three B’s: boobs, booze, and blood, all to keep you entertained. Like many other creature feature films, it’s a bit silly at times, but I found it charming in its own way, and it made me laugh.

Hoax

Part of the charm comes from the cast. There’s quite a variety in this film, and they all bring something special to the table. I especially loved Adrienne Barbeau and Brian Thompson’s characters. It was fun seeing legendary actors in roles like this and watching everything play out.

If you enjoy bloodshed, Hoax delivers. I thought the special effects were pretty awesome and fit well with the tone of the film. It has a real ’80s feel to it, combined with some modern elements, which is always a plus to me.

Final Thoughts

Hoax will be coming to VOD and Blu-Ray on August 20, 2019. It’s the perfect movie to wrap up your summer with us and figure out what is REALLY lurking in the woods.
