BUFF 2019: Mariah Klapatch’s ‘Ultra Witchy’ Is Creepy Fun

Ultra Witchy is the story of three very different women, all of whom share a family home. Over the course of the film, it becomes very clear that all the members of their entire town they live in seem to share a “creepy” vibe… except for one girl. The short film is written and directed by Mariah Klapatch (Island Zero 2018) and stars Mariah Bergeron (Telephoto), Doree Austin and Island Zero’s Elaine Landry, Anna Gravel and Joseph Klapatch.

The film itself has a dazzling psychedelic mood and is beautifully bathed in red. The music is simply perfect, really enhancing the spooky mood. The story focuses primarily on two very witchy women and a younger woman who seems determined to buck the trend in the town. The strength of this film is truly in the tension created between these three characters. It’s remarkable that so much can be said in so short a time period.

To say any more would certainly spoil the fun. You need to watch it yourelf. Luckily, Ultra Witchy is playing Friday, March 22, 2019 at the Homegrown Horror Chapter VI: Discomfort Food Shorts offering. Playing at 5:15 p.m. at the Boston Underground Film Festival.

“For over twenty years, the Boston Underground Film Festival has been bringing the finest in vanguard filmmaking from all over the world to New England cinephiles. BUFF celebrates unconventional stories, idiosyncratic voices, fever dreams, nightmarish visions, and all manner of cinematic forms, in service of an audience ravenous for an annual sensory bacchanalia from beyond the mainstream.”
