Grotesque

Brandon Rhiness’s ‘GROTESQUE’ (2022) – Movie Review

I’m s huge fan of slasher films and I love indie horror so indie slasher are right up my alley. Recently, thanks to a Facebook friend, Matt Skinner, I learned of an indie slasher film known as Grotesque.

Grotesque follows anti heroine Mildred Moyer as she gets revenge on everyone, and I mean everyone, who has ever bullied or wronged her.

Let’s examine!

Synopsis

Lovable psychopath Mildred Moyer doesn’t take kindly to her back-alley plastic surgery operation getting botched and unleashes vengeance on everyone from her past who tormented her about her looks

Grotesque was written and directed by Brandon Rhiness (I’m Haunted). The film stars Elizabeth Chamberlain (I’m Haunted), Jaime Hill (Skinamarink), Hudsynn Grace Kennedy (Markings of Murder), Julie Whelan (Hot Box), Jade Benoit (Grotesque 2), Tom Antoni (I’m Haunted 2), Jarvis Greiner (Grotesque 2), Julia Van Dam (The Ezzera & Gore-Girl Horror Anthology), and Elena Hlebnicova (I’m Haunted 2)

I absolutely loved Grotesque. Mildred Moyer is an absolutely wonderful character. She’s fun, quirky and has great one liners. Elizabeth Chamberlain give a wonderful performance, gleefully murdering her way through a list of characters that honestly have it coming to them. She even gets to sing a song, “Casually Suicidal,” which is genuinely catchy and a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the story and how things played out.

Everyone bullies Mildred because of her large nose and after a botched operation in the back of a strip club, she is left noseless and is driven insane to the point she does a mask and starts to murder everyone who ever insulted her appearance. She slashes throats, tears out ice and stabs people with a pool cue.

I really like how Grotesque gives us some characters to hate and makes us want to root for Mildred, who’s a really nice and sweet character before she loses it. She really didn’t deserve it, so it was nice to see the assholes get theirs.

One of the most hateable characters is Blanche, played excellently by Julie Whelan. She’s a horror boss and generally treats her employees, and everyone around her, including her friends, like garbage. The final act is gleefully violent and satisfying. Hell, it even has a happy ending, which you don’t see in many horror films.

Final Thoughts

Grotesque is an excellent indie slasher full of laughs and great kills. Mildred Moyer is a great character and Elizabeth Chamberlain gives a pitch perfect performance. Mildred Moyer is a indie horror icon in the making. Highly recommended.
