After attending Flashback Weekend in Chicago on August 6th, 2016 I had the pleasure of meeting one of the most humble celebrities I’ve ever come across. The very talented and versatile actor Andrew Divoff. You may recognize him from his iconic role as the Djinn in Wishmaster (1997) and Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies (1999). He also starred in films such as Graveyard Shift (1990), Another 48 Hrs. (1990), Toy Soldiers (1991), Air Force One (1997) as well as the television series Lost and The Black List. Basically, the legendary actor has dabbled in a little bit of everything with over 100 credits on IMDB! I knew after meeting Andrew that I just had to get an interview with him and he graciously accepted!
Pophorror.com: First off, thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to do this interview! You have a pretty extensive resume in the film and T.V. industry, how did you get your start in the business?
Andrew Divoff: I started off as an extra. It was the worst paying job, but the best job to learn while observing.
Pophorror.com: Definitely, we all have to start somewhere. What would you say was your favorite role that you have taken under?
Andrew Divoff: My favorite role, Luis Cali in Toy Soldiers. It was the first role where I got some attention. Also the best commentary from the “BIZ”. “Well he’s a very good actor, but that accent is going to hold him back!”
Pophorror.com: Toy Soldiers is one of my favorite movies, I really enjoyed your character. Speaking of other characters, what was it like to play the Djinn in Wishmaster?
Andrew Divoff: Sticky! But great at the end of the tunnel!
Pophorror.com: Haha, I bet. How long did it take you to get into costume?
Andrew Divoff: 3.5 hours in and 1.5 hours out!
Pophorror.com: Dang, that’s a long time. What is your favorite scene from Wishmaster?
Andrew Divoff: I’d have to say all my scenes opposite my monstrous brethren.
PopHorror: Good answer. On that note, how did you get your voice so deep and creepy for playing The Djinn?
Andrew Divoff: Jelly Beans and Protein Shakes! Way to cover the inside of the throat!
Pophorror.com: Haha, that’s crazy cool! What would it take to make another Wishmaster with you as the Djinn?
Andrew Divoff: Simple Bob K. and Peter A. Also some bucks for EFX!
Pophorror.com: Well, we can wish for it to happen.. Until then are there any upcoming roles for film or T.V. that you are taking on?
Andrew Divoff: Please keep an eye out for “The Hatred,” produced by Malek Akkad, directed by Michael Keho and stars Nina Siemachko, Darby Anne Walker, and myself.
Pophorror.com: Awesome, can’t wait! What are your passion projects that you are currently working on and how can one get involved?
Andrew Divoff: Please check out my involvement with Djinn’s HellaBrew and charity pours. I will be pouring for two Rim High School scholarships (1 boy, 1 girl) for the performing arts and will be hocking off my pix, t-shirts and of course my beer. My goal is to push it to $750.00 for each student. Please go to andrewdivoff.net and check out the T’s which should be posted in the next couple of days.
Pophorror.com: Awesome, will do! Can you tell me about the beer you started brewing and the reason behind it and its name?
Andrew Divoff: I’ve told you a little about my beer, the reason for it came from doing a charity wine pour in Denver, Colorado hosted by Raun Crawford. When I got to talk to Adam Draeger, a local BrewMaster, l decided the Djinn should have his own Brew.
Pophorror.com: I most definitely want to try it! Once again, thank you again for taking the time to do this interview. On that note, I just have one more question that I’m sure all of your fans are wondering. If you could have one wish what would it be?
Andrew Divoff: My wish would be for each of us to do what we can to be part of our respective communities and help in the measure we can to make them stronger and more inter-connected.
