The Secrets We Keep is unlike any other film I’ve seen this year and most definitely one of the best ones. Mind-boggling and brilliant!
This film was directed by Yuval Adler (Bethlehem 2013) and co-written by himself and Ryan Covington. The cast stars Noomi Rapace, Joel Kinnaman, and Chris Messina.
Synopsis for The Secrets We Keep
In post-WWII America, a woman, rebuilding her life in the suburbs with her husband, kidnaps her neighbor and seeks vengeance for the heinous war crimes she believes he committed against her.
This film delivers a gut-wrenching and emotionally powerful story that will stay with you long after the film is over. You want to believe Maja (Rapace), but you’re not sure if she’s going through a psychotic break or if what she sees is real. Mostly, you believe her because if you’ve ever dealt with true trauma, you know what it feels like it and how it sticks with you. Certain things trigger you, and you never forget them. But sometimes, paranoia can cause confusion, so what is the truth?
All of the actors are riveting and shook me to my core, especially the one given by Noomi Rapace. She delivers an award-winning performance that will make you physically ill and angry. You can feel everything she feels and you just want justice for her, no matter what that that justice is. Chris Messina plays her husband, Lewis, and he’s equally brilliant. He delivers a powerful supporting role and stands strong despite all the horror that is thrown in his face. Joel Kinnaman’s role as Thomas is unnerving and makes you utterly uncomfortable not knowing if he is the bad guy or the victim.
The film is also shot beautifully with fantastic cinematography, and every detail from lighting to clothing to set design plays an important part in why The Secrets We Keep delivers on all aspects. Everything comes together perfectly creating a powerful story with a sense of dread and horror from beginning to end.
Final Thoughts
Not many films can deliver such a powerful and emotional experience as this one does. It will haunt you and make you think twice about how troubling and exhausting the secrets we keep can be. The Secrets We Keep is, hands down, one of the best films of 2020 and available now On Demand. I highly recommend checking it out!
