Rob Zombie’s Halloween is certainly one of the most controversial horror remakes. It’s completely divided horror fans in the ten years it’s existed. Today, PopHorror celebrates Halloween’s ten year anniversary!

After being committed for 17 years, Michael Myers (Tyler Mane), now a grown man and still very dangerous, escapes from the mental institution and immediately returns to Haddonfield to find his baby sister, Laurie (Scout Taylor-Compton).
One of the most controversial things about RZ’s Halloween is the backstory that was given to Michael Myers. That happens to be one of the reasons I love the film. He gave a very realistic backstory for one of the biggest names in horror. Rob Zombie once stated that he went into a meeting with the Weinsteins with two films in mind: one that was only about Myers’ childhood, and then the remake. They ended up shooting the idea down, and that’s why the first half of the film is about his childhood.
One of my favorite things about this film is the brutality in it! Being the tallest actor to play Myers with a height of 6’9, Tyler Mane was able to make the character very eerie and intimidating. He is undoubtedly my favorite Myers! Rob originally wanted his wife, Sheri Moon Zombie, to play Laurie’s friend Lynda; however, he wanted a tall actress to play Michael’s mother, so she was cast as Deborah Myers instead.
One particular scene that was difficult to watch was the death of Danny Trejo’s character, Ismael. The studio heads even wanted that scene cut, but after Rob explained the importance of it, he was allowed to keep it. What is the importance of the scene? Well, it perfectly showed how brutal and merciless Michael has become, even towards someone who’d been kind to him all those years. I think Ismael’s death was a perfect way to prove that point.
Rob Zombie took a famous madman and brought him a fantastic remake that included Zombie’s classic film style. It was different enough to be seen as its own film, instead of being so close to the original, and have no point in remaking it. What are your thoughts on the remake?
