Documentary Review: ‘THE LAST PICTURE SHOWS’ (2026)

Going to the movie theater has always been a welcomed escape from reality. From my first experience as a small child being mesmerized by Disney’s 101 Dalmatians to my most recent venture into space with Project Hail Mary, there is something magical about it all. It is this love and appreciation of the cinematic universe that I eagerly accepted the opportunity to review a new documentary,The Last Picture Shows (2026).

Trailer:

The Last Picture Shows (2026) is a documentary by Rusty Thompson. The focus is an exploration of 10 states, 10,825 miles, and 123 theaters to give audiences the modern reality of small town theaters. It felt like the documentary counterpart to Easy Rider. It gives audiences the hope of a nostalgic journey, but what is captured is a darker and more reflective lens.

The documentary delves into the challenges these beloved picture houses have faced over the decades—from the hardships of the Great Depression to the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. It celebrates their resilience and endurance, but there is no hiding the many casualties and lingering death of this once great shared experience in many small cities and towns across the country.

The cinematography is absolutely stunning, capturing the bleak yet atmospheric reality of institutions that once brought immense joy to generations of moviegoers. The blending of film history, archival footage, and classic movie clips is skillfully executed, creating a rich and engaging narrative. Equally compelling are the interviews with historians, film enthusiasts, and the passionate theater owners who have sacrificed and dedicated their existence to preserving these once-majestic temples of cinema. It played to my nostalgia of something so great while creating sadness giving the reality of its current existence.

Take the time to check out The Last Picture Shows (2026) and share a special memory from a moviegoing experience.
