And Cut: Calvin Morie McCarthy’s ‘EVIDENCE OF THE BOOGEYMAN’ (2025) – Review

Calvin Morie McCarthy’s Evidence Of The Boogeyman is a jump-scare-invested visual effects piece that actually made me jump a bit. The crew knew exactly how to piece together a good, twisted ride of a bunch of “What the f**k?” moments. I always come across a lot of these up-and-comers on Tubi, officially the best streaming channel of all time.

Let’s get into this review.

Synopsis

A small film crew sets out to shoot a paranormal documentary at a farmhouse haunted by legend. What starts as a lighthearted project descends into terror when their footage reveals horrifying evidence that the Boogeyman might be real.

The Rundown

Boogeyman aside, you could tell this was an obvious story about something kind of old. However, they do it right. The film is a shaken mix of torment and a lot of loud noises. At first, I thought it was gonna be pretty bad, but the second watch made me enjoy it more. The jump scares were in abundance, but I can safely tell you the ‘Boogeyman’ is terrifying, because you can barely make him out; he was always waiting. This film gave me confidence in the found footage, which has been dying out, repeating the whole story about a ghost from a Ouija board.

The film is based on a haunted house to see if the story is true. Though you can’t hear what the spirit is saying, that’s when things got really fun. As a young adult, I lived in the most haunted city in the country, which even earned a documentary. I can assure you, a lot of it is true. That’s how Evidence Of The Boogeyman got me rattled just a tad. The presentation bears those weird witches (I think) vibes. It seemed so real to me, and I used found footage as an escape from the reality I still live in. However, these films make me happy that there is a bit of gratuitous sex and chasing people around in the dark

The finale has it all. Not too many movies I have to watch a second time never made the cut. Evidence Of The Boogeyman was not like that. I was almost an instant fan because I love it when the films are about news reporters meeting their maker, “documentary” ones are my favorite, pulling the belief that you think of. Considering that in the early 2000’s we saw the world welcoming in movies such as The Strangers and House of a Thousand Corpses, it immediately took off on home invasions or ruthless killers.

In The End

These types of movies are the ones I search for for hours. Wanting to fill my mind with fake reality, because in this reality, I can turn it on or off pretty quickly. Yes, sometimes these types of movies make my mental illness symptoms start. I quickly learned I love found footage, but still not a fan of modern artsy movies. That isn’t horror to me.

Films like Evidence Of The Boogeyman are what I consider horror in the world of fake reality. Knowing none of this is true helps me cope through the day. I owe a lot to films like Evidence Of The Boogeyman; they pulled me through some scary times in my mind. It helps disappear from my troubles. I would definitely suggest giving the film just once and forming your own opinion, then watch it again and see how much your view changes.

About Craig Lucas

I hail from rural PA where there isn't much to do except fixate on something. Horror was, and still is my fixation. I have 35 years of horror experience under my belt, I love the horror community and it loves me.
