Movie Review: Devereux Milburn’s ‘Honeydew’ (2021) Is A Slow Burn With A Wild Ending!

I recently watched the wild horror thriller, Honeydew. This film was written and directed by Devereux Milburn (shorts “Stayed For” and “Wade”) and stars Sawyer Spielberg in his feature acting debut, Malin Barr (Skyscraper, First Love, CBS’s “Bull”), and Barbara Kingsley (The Straight Story, “Jessica Jones”).

 

Synopsis for HONEYDEW

This film tells the story of a young couple (played by Spielberg and Barr) who are forced to seek shelter in the home of an aging farmer (Kingsley) and her peculiar son, when they suddenly begin having strange cravings and hallucinations taking them down a rabbit hole of the bizarre.

This film was undoubtedly bizarre. Can’t way I’ve ever seen anything quite like it. There have been many films where characters seek shelter only to find themselves in a world of trouble. Honeydew takes it up a 1000 notches. From beginning to end, the film delivers an unnerving atmosphere that sends chills down your spine with phenomenal performances, and an ending to die for.

Sawyer Spielberg and Malin Barr go through hell and back in Honeydew and captivates audiences with their performances and cringeworthy transformations throughout the film. Barbara Kingsley was the cherry on top of a truly terrifying story, though. Her performance was exceptional and made me uneasy.

I’ll admit that it took me a while to enjoy this film. It’s very much a slow burn and I was like what the hell is going on, but the ending made it worth it. It was shocking, horrifying, and left me flabbergasted.

Final Thoughts

Although it took me a little bit to gain interest, Honeydew aims to please and does it shockingly well. Dark Star Pictures and Bloody Disgusting will release the rural horror film Honeydew on VOD, Digital HD, and DVD on April 13, 2021.
