‘Zombieland 2: Double Tap’ (2019): An Undead Sequel With Lots Of Bite – Movie Review

Ever since 2009’s Zombieland, fans of the undead horror comedy have been dying to see what’s become of their favorite characters, Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock. Ten years ago, this film unearthed a whole slew of wacky walker spoofs as it blended a post-apocalyptic world with funny and relatable characters and their rules for survival. After a decade of silence, Zombieland 2: Double Tap (2019) was finally dug up for us, and it had large shoes to fill. But returning director Ruben Fleischer (Venom 2018) found a way to make a sequel that not only has the same charm as the first film, but does even more to build on the lore that we remember so fondly.

It was critical to get the same crew to return to Zombieland 2: Double Tap. Just as these people had grown, so had we as an audience. By having Fleischer at the helm again, the continuity was in place and the rules that were established before were brought back. The acting in this is very sharp, with all of the charming awkwardness that we’re used to from the first film. Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network 2010), Emma Stone (La La Land 2016), Woody Harrelson (Solo: A Star Wars Story 2018) and Abigail Breslin (Maggie 2015 – read our review here) all reprised their roles as four survivors with little in common but a newfound family bond.

This time through, the characters have matured with the story. Columbus is looking to settle down with Wichita, but she has her doubts. Little Rock grows rebellious and is out to find people her own age to spend time with. However, it wasn’t just the evolution of those characters that made this new story flow so effortlessly. The writers also integrated new characters into the script. Three of the four main characters have new love interests who not only give them more depth, but also provides excellent comic relief in between the zombie battles. Speaking of the zombies, they have had an evolution of their own. They are now divided into groups, and each type has their own unique wheelhouse. This set the scene for bigger and more dangerous battles to invest in. Zombieland 2: Double Tap raises the stakes like any good sequel should.
