Steven Spielberg’s ‘THE GOONIES’ (1985) – Retro Review

Let me say first that I jumped at he chance to review this. The Goonies became a well-known classic since the day it premiered. People ate this film up as one of the greatest adventure movies of all time. The Goonies opened my eyes to see a brighter side. It taught me that sometimes there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. No adventure movie has ever been able to take The Goonies from the top of my totem pole.

Let’s get started.

Synopsis

A group of young misfits called “The Goonies” discovers an ancient map and set out on an adventure to find a legendary pirate’s long-lost treasure. Along the way they must fight against the Fratelli family. The group navigates the giant cave while being chased by the Fratelli’s and it becomes a race to who will find the gold. Adventure after adventur, can they save their homes?

Richard Donner directed the film. It stars Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, and Robert Davi.

The Goonies is a top-tier ’80s movie. It can take you back to a different time when you want to feel safe in your childhood. It doesn’t matter how many times I have seen the film; I always find joy, and there’s something new that I notice. I could never get into films like Indiana Jones; all I need is The Goonies. From the scenery to the breakthrough storyline. It was something not too many people had seen before The Goonies. It’s a movie you can watch as a family and share the moment together.

The Goonies cast was phenomenal and perfectly tuned in to make everyone have their own shine in a different way. They were outcasts, so was I. They became heroes, and not many non-horror movies hit me like that. I still feel excited to see the end of the movie, because the story is just that great. Every moment t in the movie showed how the kids who no one liked came together and took the jump to find money that could save their neighborhood. You will find yourself constantly yelling for joy, and also on the edge of your seat.  The millions of people who enjoy this movie like me have their own story.

In The End

What makes the film so special for me is that I saw my friends and I. I think about the adventures we had as kids. The Goonies taught me that if there’s a chance, jump for it. It makes me feel good in my worst moments, reminding me of how important I am. I realized that I could do the same as a kid. Every day was a new adventure. We were the kids who said they were going to a friend’s house, and then headed out miles away, racing back before dinner. There is nothing like imagination.

The best part for me was the bond between Chunk and Sloth. It was true love, like when a dog picks its owner. If you haven’t seen The Goonies yet, I have one question: why not? The film is a staple in my life, and now I share the joy and excitement with my kids, like a ritual to be a part of the family.
