Welcome to Willy’s Wonderland (2020): Another Animatronic Nightmare – Movie Review

I love strange films, and one of my newest obsessions is the whole animatronics gone bad scenario. Recently, I reviewed the film The Banana Splits (2019 – read that review here), and then I came across this gem. Welcome to Kevin Lewis’s Willy’s Wonderland, a world fueled by Nicolas Cage’s intense yet quiet personality where we get another fun-filled gore show.

To be honest, when I first decided to watch it, I wasn’t to sure what to expect. Although it was a gore show, The Banana Splits had a happier almost silly feel to it. This one, however, doesn’t. That and the animatronics are dustier, danker, darker and more worn out. And it isn’t just about rogue animatronics; the backstory involves something incredibly dark and much more ominous.

Not fueled by computers but by possession, this array of creepy characters are downright spine chilling. The former owner hired the worst people in the world to host children’s parties. The result of this is some bad mojo at Willy’s Wonderland. And that is where Nicolas Cage comes in doing what he does best! Going batshit crazy and beating something up.

For me, I am a fan of Willy’s Wonderland, although I do admit that it isn’t for everyone. Just like all specific subgenres, there is always a preference. This film seems to be the beginning of a long trail of animatronic horror. From The Banana Splits to Willy’s Wonderland, I am curious what is going to come out next and what is in the future for this new type of film genre. Could there be a Five Nights At Freddy’s film in the near future? I guess we will have to wait and see, but either way, this movie is downright awesome.
