She Rises (2017) A Mind Bending Ride Review

If there is one thing you need to know about me, I would say that I love a good, twisted movie that makes my jaw drop and leaves me scratching my head saying, “What the fuck did I just watch?” Of course, then I precede to re-watch it over and over again, looking for stuff that I didn’t pick up on in the first place. For me, these are all great signs of an awesome film. This is exactly what director Larry Wade Carrell (Jacob) did with his latest film, She Rises.

She Rises was directed by award winning Larry Wade Carrell from an original screenplay written by Angus Macfadyen, based on an original story by Lony Ruhmann. The film also happens to star Macfadyen (Saw III), Jennifer Blanc-Biehn (Dark Angel TV series), Michael Biehn (Aliens) and Daisy McCrackin (Halloween: Resurrection), with a fun cameo by Carrell himself. She Rises premiered at the Ireland Horrorthon Film Festival.

Official Synopsis of She Rises:

A director and her lead actor get a vacation rental while filming a movie. What starts as a helpful, unassuming, very nice host becomes their worst nightmare

What Works

She Rises is just a blast from start to finish. It is a film fully aware of itself but isn’t afraid to push the bar. All of the movie quotes and references are so fun, I was actually curious to what quote Macfadyen is going to pop out with next. The synopsis of the film may sound like something you’ve seen before. However, I’m here to tell you that it’s not. The characters are fun and never boring. At times you wonder if you are still watching the same movie. Blanc-Biehn is a total knockout. Not only is this woman stunning but she has proven herself to be a force within in this genre, both in front of and behind the camera. Michael Biehn as Daddy Longlegs is a total hoot but creepy at the same time. McCracken as Rosebud plays the perfect seemingly innocent backwoods gal.

What Doesn’t Work

I actually really enjoyed She Rises. However, I know some people can be picky. I think some might be annoyed with the breaking of the fourth wall, I don’t think that it takes anything away from the overall film at all. I just know how some horror fans are and I think that could potentially be a deal breaker for some. But hey – to each their own! I love self-aware movies.

Final Thoughts

She Rises is some serious fun! Blanc Biehn Productions is certainly one production company that is quickly rising to my favorites list. She Rises delivers on all formats for me. It had me questioning not only my own reality, but my sanity as well. If you like movies that make you say, “What the fuck?” – not in a bad way but in the BEST possible way…then She Rises is for you.
