Panic Fest 2020 Movie Review: ‘The Perished’ Is Gut-Wrenching And Horrifying!

I’ve been dying to watch The Perished for the past year, but something always came up. Finally, I was able to watch it for Panic Fest 2020 and let’s just say it was worth the wait.

This gut-wrenching film was written and directed by Paddy Murphy. The cast includes Fiach Kunz, Paul Fitzgerald, Stephen Tubridy, Oisin Robbins, and more.

Synopsis for The Perished

Sarah Dekker is dealing with the trauma of an abortion. Shunned by her mother and dumped by her boyfriend, she recovers at an old parochial house. Unbeknownst to her the house is the site of a mass baby grave – they need a mother.

First, let me just say I think it’s a bold move to tell a story about abortion. It’s a very controversial subject that gets people riled up, but I think it’s important to talk about it. Ignoring it is pointless. Paddy Murphy’s film delivers a horrifying portrayal of what some women go through after having an abortion plus much more. Pure nightmare fuel that will haunt you.

Making a decision as Sarah does in The Perished is never easy. It comes with much uncertainty. So many what if’s, nightmares of what could have been, plus the harsh and constant judgment from others. Personally, I’ve never had to deal with a situation like this but there have been times where I’ve wondered what I would do and how it would impact me. This film takes it to a whole new terrifying level, though. Showing how not everyone will accept your decision and some will go to great lengths to prove that. Let’s just say, I think the old parochial house aka the mass baby grave will haunt me forever.

Both Fiach Kunz and Courtney McKeon give gut-wrenching and emotionally driven performances that will you shake you to your core. It’s real, raw, and honest. All of the emotions one would expect when experiencing something like this.

The special effects and makeup in The Perished are wickedly awesome and sickly gruesome. They help heighten the suspense and horror and make things feel all too real.

Final Thoughts

There’s nothing quite out there like The Perished and I found it refreshing, eye-opening, and terrifying. Definitely, one that everyone should check out and keep an eye out for as it continues its way through the festival circuit!
