Nothing could have prepared me for the wild and chaotic ride that IFC Midnight’s We Need to Do Something delivers. The film was directed by Sean King O’Grady and stars Lisette Alexis (Waltz of the Angels), John James Cronin (Second Act), Pat Healy (read our interview with him – HERE), Sierra McCormick (Land of the Lost), and Vinessa Shaw (The Hills Have Eyes).
Synopsis for We Need to Do Something
After Melissa and her family seek shelter from a storm, they become trapped. With no sign of rescue, hours turn to days, and Melissa comes to realize that she and her girlfriend, Amy, might have something to do with the horrors that threaten to tear her family – and the entire world – apart.
This film starts out pretty tame. A normal family with normal problems. That is until all hell breaks loose. This isn’t your average storm and it doesn’t take long before they realize something dark and sinister is behind it and even furthermore their daughter has something to do with it! We Need to Do Something is a wild and risky story with eccentric characters, bold performances, and glorious special effects.
All of the characters and performances in We Need to Do Something make it the occult masterpiece that it is. They all have a quirky and unique chemistry that makes them feel like a genuine family (despite being broken). Pat Healy is the glue of the film and this man can do no wrong. He delivers an over the top, brilliant performance that will rattle you. Vinessa Shaw is a childhood favorite of mine and I love that she continues to work within the horror genre. She dominated this role with an emotional and riveting performance of a troubled wife and mother who would do anything for this madness to end. I recently saw Sierra McCormick in an episode of American Horror Stories and she blew me away in that and even more so in We Need to Do Something. She has a unique and edgy style about her and I think we will continue to see great things from her. John James Cronin is the heart of the film and I wanted nothing for his innocence to be spared.
What really blew me away about this film is the wild, over the top, and glorious special effects. They are what make this film stand out and unveils the true chaotic nightmare that We Need to Do Something is about. From severed parts to summoning demons, you never know what to expect and no one is safe.
Final Thoughts
We Need to Do Something is one of the weirdest films I’ve ever watched but I love how far it pushed the limits. Everything felt on edge and uncertain because ANYTHING could happen.
