Luca Guadagnino’s ‘I AM LOVE’ (2009) – Retro Review

Tilda Swinton is certainly a remarkable talent and this film only cements her status as an actress whose chameleon-like tendencies make her a formidable player in this delightful treat by director Luca Guadagnino: I Am Love.

The story centers around a woman named Emma who comes from a very financially secure family and who has a responsibility to her husband and children, but all of that is threatened when she begins an affair with her son’s best friend, the chef Antonio.

I will admit that the film is somewhat slow and the pacing tends to drag but it picks up with Emma’s philandering ways and gets truly interesting with the food dishes and colorful palette that Antonio brought to add flair to the scene and cinematography.

The film almost seems like an ode to an Alfred Hitchcock movie that centers around a woman having a secret affair with her son’s friend. This forbidden love subplot might seem somewhat derivative to the point that we have all seen it before but it does make for some interesting viewing.

Overall, this film might suffer from some pacing issues across the board, but it still has enough vital performances from the cast and solid direction from Luca Guadagnino.

I Am Love is currently streaming on MAX, Roku Channel, Hulu and more, and is also available to rent and own on digital platforms.
