Late Checkout

Review – Josh Graves’s ‘LATE CHECKOUT’ (2023): Small Town. Large Body Count…

Say what you will about B-rated horrors, but Indie slashers are a national treasure. If you follow Pophorror on socials, you may have seen the bloody trending trailer for new indie Director Josh Graves’s (The House That Eats Flesh 2023) Late Checkout. The trailer is pretty metal that’s masterly, right down to the font. The trailer and movie poster hit so hard, that I was more than stoked to screen Late Checkout this weekend.

Check out the trailer below and see for yourself!

Late Checkout Synopsis

A group of friends rent a cabin in their old hometown, but there’s a string of brutal killings and they are the killer’s next target.

Directed by Josh Graves from a screenplay co-written with Molly Souza. Produced by Felissa Rose, Dan Kearney, and Dave Sheridan. The Dark Circles production stars Felissa Rose (Terrifier 2 (2022); Victor Crowley (2017); Sleepaway Camp (1983), L.C. Holt (V/H/S/2 (2013); You’re Next (2011), Chaney Morrow (Malum (2023; Wrong Turn (2021), and Kamara Cole (Wolf Hollow (2023).

Let’s scope that dope poster art!

Amendment to the Aught Slashers

It was an era that was labeled with many remakes and forgotten gems. Late Checkout channels the early 2000’s energy of its overlooked predecessors, while staying away from CG and staying true to more practical blood on top of blood. That’s where Indie director Josh Graves’s vision for his Kickstarter has a bit more modern slasher feel.

With a familiar setup of a group of friends with party vibes and romantic dramas. Blend in a cabin in the woods, a masked killer on the loose with over-the-top creative kills equipped with a heavy metal soundtrack, and boom! We’re slashing away with no shortage of the red stuff.

Final Thoughts

In and of itself Late Checkout meets all the criteria of a fun slasher that caught your eye on the Friday night video rental shelf of your youth. Yet It’s not just another dope cover art that’s reminiscent of vintage ’80s, Late Checkout rewards you with a gore fest of the aughts with indie rigidity.

Look for Late Checkout on digital platforms soon.
