Motel Hell first came into my life when I was about 6 years old. I actually arrived late to the party, considering the movies I had seen before it. Motel Hell gave the aura of all those silly slasher sequels and ran with it, calling it a parody of slasher movies. I bought right into it, and this film rotates in my schedule pretty regularly today.
Let’s get into the review.
Synopsis
Farmer Vincent and his younger sister Ida kidnap unsuspecting travelers and bury them alive in his field with their vocal cords slit to prevent them from screaming for help. Their family motto is “It takes all kinds of critters to make Farmer Vincent Fritters”. They fatten up their victims to prepare them for sale as a secret ingredient in their famous smoked meat. But the latest crop of them break free, seeking revenge on their captors.
Motel Hell took the lead on storylines, whether copied or created. It has been a higher scale film for true horror movie fans. I can safely say that all of my friends and I marathoned movies all day and drove around all night. I guess you could say Motel Hell formed a strong bond between all of us, even 20 years later, living on separate coasts. The film always had a way of becoming our most-watched because sometimes we needed a laugh.
The Rundown
Motel Hell is like the Weird Al Yankovic of horror. It touches base on the entire slasher film series. In subtle or outright ways of calling them out. Basically, The Film was the Scary Movie series of the 80s. What is unfortunate is that the movie was released too early and could have had so many more movies and sequels to make fun of. Though the film is a parody, it’s also a very interesting look at what was acceptable in the ’80s. Also, the harvesting of humans in a garden is more creative than most of us could ever think of.
Aside from being a film that grasps your funny bone, it also displays some really heavy gore. If that isn’t your thing, it is a challenge you take on. There are multiple ways to exert your eyes while still paying attention in Motel Hell. So the gore is avoidable. Personally, I live for greusome moments. However I do know that some people just arent into it, and I respect that fact.
In The End
This review turned out to be just a bit of a focus on growing up and what made me a fan; because the film has so many moments in my head that make me feel safe. Aside from my fandom; Motel Hell is worth every single second. Whether you are looking for horror, or comedy. The film inspred so many film makers, knowing what to respect in the originaloity of this story. Though it was imitated a time or two, Motel Hell still stands strong. The film stands strong at the top of my totem pole and is beloved by so many people in the horror genre.
