Kensuke Sonomura’s ‘GHOST KILLER’ (2025) – Movie Review

I absolutely love revenge films so when I was given the opportunity to check out the supernatural revenge film Ghost Killer, I was really excited. Did Ghost Killer meet my high expectations?

Synopsis

When college student Fumika (Akari Takaishi) stumbles upon the bullet that ended hitman Kudo’s (Masanori Mimoto) life, his vengeful spirit takes hold of her body. Now possessed by a ruthless assassin’s rage and skills, she becomes an unstoppable force, hunting down those responsible for his death. As the body count rises, the line between Fumika and Kudo begins to blur. From the action director of Baby Assassins, One-Percent Warrior, and Bad City, GHOST KILLER delivers a furious tale of supernatural revenge.

Ghost Killer was directed by Kensuke Sonomura (Bad City) and written by Yugo Sakamoto (Baby Assassins). The film stars Akari Takaishi (Baby Assassins franchise), Mario Kuroba (Hard Days), and Masanori Mimoto (Enter the Fat Dragon).

I absolutely loved Ghost Killer. A murdered hitman haunting and occasionally possessing a college student offers a unique take on the revenge genre. I really enjoyed Fumika. She’s just your average college student trying to make her way through life and finds herself in a situation where she’s in far over her head. She’s prone to freaking out at exactly the wrong time but that makes her relatable.

I enjoyed her relationship with Kudo, the murdered hitman. In exchange for Fumika letting him use her body to get revenge, he protects her and her friends throughout their daily lives, such as keeping Fumika from getting drugged and assaulted at a bar and protecting Fumika’s best friend from her abusive boyfriend. It does a lot to show that Kudo isn’t just a killer but a decent person. They’re aided on their journey by Kagehara, another hitman who worked with Kudo.

The action scenes are frenzied and brutal, striking a wonderful balance and keeping things fun. I like that sometimes we saw Fumika doing the action and other times it was Kudo and Kagehara. This kept things interesting and kept things from getting too repetitive. I really enjoyed Akari Takaishi as Fumika. She brings great comedic timing to the character and makes them immensely likable. She also kills it in her action scenes. Masanori Mimoto does a great job as Kudo and has great chemistry with Akari Takaishi that makes all their interactions together really fun.

Final Thoughts

Ghost Killer is a fun and unique supernatural take on the standard revenge thriller. I really enjoyed the relationship between Fumika and Kudo. The film has wonderful action and a great sense of humor. Highly recommended.
